Maternity Leave Question
Not preggo yet, but figured this is the most appropriate place to post this question. I know that for the FMLA, you need to be at your company for a year, but is this also typically the case for a company's maternity paid leave? I know it probably varies from company to company, but just looking at what is generally the case.
Thanks!

Re: Maternity Leave Question
Most companies don't have a "maternity" leave per se. It gets rolled into Short Term Disability leaves.
That varies by company and by state, but generally does not require one year of service.
I know the way ours works is you get payment based on tenure. So if you've been here for a year, you get one week paid in full and the other weeks at a percentage. Two years = two weeks, etc.

Re: Maternity Leave Question
I have been at my job since the end of June. I am not eligible for FMLA but short term disability pays me 4 weeks at 100% pay and then 4 weeks at 80% pay. After that, my job pays me an additional 4 weeks at 100% once disability ends. I got lucky
I am taking off 2 weeks prior to my due date and then 12 weeks after my baby is born

Re: Maternity Leave Question
A lot of places do not even have paid maternity leave. My office doesn't even qualify for FMLA.

Mine doesn't either, I haven't told them yet, so I have no idea what I will get, but I know some sort of disability.

Re: Maternity Leave Question
Totally depends on the company.
NY State allows you 6 weeks on disability and 8 weeks for a c/s disability for the birth of your child (the $ sucks on disability, $170 is the max per week minus fed taxes).

Re: Maternity Leave Question
My company had a paid maternity leave but you had to work for them for one year before you qualified. Even then it was only 8 weeks paid. The rest had to be taken as vacation time.

My employer doesn't offer paid maternity leave. I was trying to find the info on the NY State Disability, but cannot really find much. Am I supposed to get the forms and file the paperwork or does my employer do that? Do you know?

Re: Maternity Leave Question
Here in MD, childbirth doesn't qualify as "disability"- so even with just 170.00 a week, it's at least something.
My company allows up to 7 months off (all unpaid) before losing health coverage. Thankfully, I have my health insurance through DH, so that's set.
All pay comes from vacation and sick bank (and my sick bank is LOW- so we're screwed methinks).

Interesting, I know my SIL got disability last year when my neice was born, but she was on bedrest for 6 weeks before and I think she got it then....
ETA: She lives in Baltimore.

Re: Maternity Leave Question
Oh boy..my office isn't that organized and we have no HR dept (smaller Law Office), so I'll have to ask. How far in advance do you fill out the forms?
