master bathroom- need opinions
Who here has a master bathroom......do you see it as a necessity?
The architect we hired for the drawings on our 2nd floor dormer extension drew in a full bathroom AND a master bathroom. We already have a full bathroom on the 1st floor. Considering I have only lived in houses with 1 bathroom my whole life, I don't really know that it's a necessity to me to have a separate master bathroom (of course once I have kids this may change!
trying to decide whether we should keep the master bath in the drawings, or change it and make one of the bedrooms bigger (or have bigger walk in closets! as it stands right now, the drawings include 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
what would you do? Keep it in and have 3 full bathrooms? Or just do one really big bathroom on the 2nd floor instead? hey it's less to clean if we only have 2! I'm just trying to hear from those have lived with or without one and make sure I don't regret it if we don't have one later!
TIA!

Re: master bathroom- need opinions
I've lived both with and without and no, it's not a NECESSITY but it's frigging awesome.
Pros: Middle of the night pee breaks are 3 minutes as opposed to 4.
Only have to open one door to get to the bathroom as opposed to 2 (bedroom door, then the bathroom door).
Can run naked from bathroom to closet in 15 secs.
Can watch TV in bedroom while brushing teeth/flossing/whatever other bathroom thing you do b/c it's so close to the bathroom.

I love how you said "and whatever other bathroom thing you do" to DH this means a whollllllle lot! lol he's always walking in & out of the bathroom....so you made good points!
when I watch house hunter type shows on HGTV it seems like EVERYONE now wants a master bathroom, so I guess I want to think about resale too. I think I have to look at the drawings again to see the dimensions he has for the walk in closets, is it wrong that I want to design the entire 2nd floor around my closet space?!?

Re: master bathroom- need opinions
i would definetly put in the master bathroom - for resale - it can then be a master suite
we cut back on not having a tub in the master bath - really nice shower instead because we have two other tubs inthe house - this may help if you need more room for your closet
and don't worry about closest statemtn - i took over a small bedroom for mine in our construction

I wish I did one. We'll add one down the line. If it doesn't throw you off budget - I would go for it.
I like the option of walking to my private bathroom naked for when the kids are older.
Did you get my FM with my dormer pics?

Re: master bathroom- need opinions
When we expand our house, we are considering having the second bathroom connect to both the hallway and our BR, so it would be a modified master suite I guess. Would that be an option?
Otherwise, I'd leave it in the drawings, I think a master bathroom is a great idea.

yes I did thank you so much!! your house looks amazing w/ the dormer, it perfectly blends with the 1st floor! 8 weeks is pretty quick from start to finish.....since DH will be doing the interior work, I'll be lucky if it's completely done in 6 months! the framing company we spoke with said they should have a new frame up in 4 days after it's ripped off....I can only hope, imagine if it's a rainy week when they do it of course with my luck it probably will be!! I'll keep you posted when we get permits....I'm in Queens, so I *think* they're faster than LI towns w/ permits, but I'll soon find out! wish me luck!
*ETA- budget is another thing to worry about since it will be double the cost for all the fixtures, the tub, toilet etc....although a stand up shower would be cheaper, so maybe we'll go that route.....thanks again for your input!!

Re: master bathroom- need opinions
Its not a necessity, as anything you can do in a master bathroom you can do in a hallway bathroom.
But IMO if you can swing it, definitely do it. For us, we had to have one....a house without one was a dealbreaker. Its so nice not having to walk out into the hallway in the middle of the night, not having to share the bathroom with guests, as Jenn said watching TV while you are washing up or brushing your teeth (I do this all the time).

Re: master bathroom- need opinions
We did an expansion exactly as you are planning - three bedrooms and two baths. We love having a master bath.

Its nice to be able to get ready at the same time.
And no fighting for the toilet, ever.
