Malaria Meds
Can anyone tell me where the travel clinics are on LI or in NYC? I'm wondering if malaria medicine is cheaper in the US than it would be here, but somehow I doubt it; just thought I would check. Any feedback on prices would be good.
Also any feedback on medicine would be great, too! I'll be in a malaria (medium risk) area (Namibia) for 2 weeks. I've read a bot about different meds, but I'd love to hear feedback.
Thanks!

Re: Malaria Meds
LIJ had one because I used it before a trip to china several years ago. I would suspect that Columbia presb./Cornell or NYU would have one as well.

Re: Malaria Meds
My primary care doctor is also a travel physician and we always get our travel jabs and meds from her. Let me know if you would like her info. She's a super sweet lady, has great bedside manner and will take a lot of time with you and your husband. She's in NYC, East 51st Street.
ETA: Just a side note: Have you taken malarial meds before? I had an AWFUL reaction to Malarone and will only take it if 100% necessary. My limbs were very swollen and I had the worst heartburn ever. Every time I ate or drank something I was in terrible pain. My husband had no reaction at all. I wonder if in Namibia you will actually need it. Are you going on a safari or just a beach vacay? (I had the meds for India..we are going back in the fall and am going to skip them this time.)

Re: Malaria Meds
I have always used Passport health - I've never used one on LI but I believe they have some offices in the area. www.passporthealthusa.com I've always taken doxycyclene to prevent malaria. It's a very inexpensive antibiotic with fewer side effects than malarone. Pros are it's cheap and in countries where you are exposed to unfamiliar germs it's not a bad thing to be taking an antibiotic anyway. Cons are you need to take it for longer (about a month after you return) and it makes you sensitive to the sun so sunscreen is a must. It also makes me sick to my stomach for the first day or two so I always make sure I ask the doc if I can start a couple of days early so I feel ok before I leave.

Re: Malaria Meds
Our doctor here said we need to take Malarone b/c the others are resistant to the malaria in the area.
Part of the trip is up north by Angola for a safari, so we'll need to take something. All the maps say it's high risk.
ETA- I've never taken malaria meds. I'm nervous about the side effects

Malaria Meds
According to the CDC website malaria in Namibia is Chloroquine resistant but other drugs work for prevention so if you're nervous it might not be a bad idea to get a 2nd opinion about what drugs work before you make a final decision - good luck http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/namibia.htm By the way, don't forget to ask about an adult polio booster if you've never had one

I would certainly stick with your docs advice. My husband took the drugs and had no problems! B astard That being said, my side effects from Malarone were so nasty it's easier for me to just cover up in a salwar kameez and wear a lot of deet!
Have you checked out the TripAdvisor site for Namibia? I would ask maybe a local experts opinion. We were also in area consider endemic but I never even saw a mosquito while were where there. If you are going during the dry season it may be less of an issue.
