Making your own baby food

Making your own baby food

For those of you who made your own baby food- did you mix formula or water in it? I pureed sweet potatoes for my daughter. I didn't want to add formula bc I thought it would take away from the taste of the sweet potatoes (she's on Neocate so it has a strong smell). After a couple of spoonfuls of her spitting it out, I mixed in some formula- she still spit it out, but it had a better consistency. Just looking for tips.

Thanks! :)

I've used BM or just water. If she likes cereal, try mixing your fruits/veggies with that. DD HATED avocados until I mixed it with some oatmeal.

DD was BF, but we never mixed BM into her food. If we didn't
LIke the consistency, we used water or low sodium stock.

I always added water while I was pureeing the food. It makes it easier to puree and get nice and smooth. In the beginning I think you want it to be fairly thin.

I used water and I mixed her cereal with BM. I also didn't start solids until almost 7 months, so she seemed able to handle thicker consistencies from the start.

I never mixed water or formula into the food I steamed/pureed. Oatmeal I mixed with formula. But sometimes I mixed the pureed food with oatmeal.

I used water in my purees. My dd was on alimentum. I never fed her cereal. Just straight to veggies.

Re: Making your own baby food

I used neocate at first, figuring if there was a familiar flavor in there, she may not find the experience too foreign. But I didn't do that for long. The veggies tended to be watery enough after awhile.

Your dd may be resisting because purees are a new experience, as is having something delivered via spoon. It takes some practice. Dd was not a fan of purees, but I had better experience feeding her with my finger.

I too use BM in the cereal. When I puree, I don't generally add anything. If when feeding I felt that it needed to be thinned out, then I'd add BM/formula or water. Just don't add BM/formula to a puree if you plan to refrigerate/freeze it.

How old is she? I tried solids at 4 months and she wasn't having it, so I tried again at 6 months and she was ready.

The new recommendations by the WHO and the AAP say to wait until 6 months for solids.

The first few days he started solids, I mixed some of his food with breast milk. I would say after the first week or two it stopped being necessary.

Cereal technically is not necessary. We skipped and went straight to fruits and veggies! My DS had sweet potato as his first food.

We did the same thing too, DD was about 6.5 mo old when we started solids. We skipped cereal/oatmeal and started with cubed avocado. We honestly never really pureed her food, except for what we provided to daycare. At home, she's always eaten what we've eaten, just cut up super fine.
