For string beans and peas (haven't made asparagus) some moms use frozen since they blend better. I however, use fresh. Just steam them, then puree them. After pureeing them push them through a strainer with a spatula or back of a spoon. This way the skins that didn't blend well will be stuck in the strainer. HTH

The last time I made asparagus, I cut the bottom of the stems, stuck them in a microwave safe bowl with a shot of water, covered with plastic wrap, nuked for 5 mins then ran thru the food processor.

But I think I'm the only one on here who uses the microwave Chat Icon

Steam them and then puree in a blender. Purees up the skins.

Re: Making my own baby food question...

Ok, so I did both Green beans and peas and BOTH came out horrible? And in a New processor. They were lumpy and stringy and a lot of the pea skins didnt puree up at all?

so then I tried the strainer. What the heck kind of strainer? I tried a small mesh one, NOTHING would come out the other end. Tried a Big one, and everything came out the other end,

What the heck am I doing wrong?

Blender.

Also... after you cook the peas and beans run them under cold water to stop the cooking process.

(just read this in a cook book this morning)

Re: Making my own baby food question...

I was scared to make green beans but they came out fine. I used frozen organic green beans. I cooked them in a little bit of water. The ped told me to actually cook them until they were soft, longer than I would if they were for us. After cooking them I used a stick mixer to puree them. I then put them through a strainer just in case but nothing was left behind. I read a tip for peas that said that you should dunk them in cold water right after cooking and that will help them puree better.

FYI - My DS, who will eat just about anything and even opens his mouth wide for zantac, hated string beans, he refused to open his mouth.

ETA: add a little water when pureeing, this will help make the string beans smoother.
