My ped told me to start with the orange veggies.... butternut squash, carrots, sweet potatoes. Then she said green veggies, then fruits.

Re: making baby food
I just did my first batch of carrots and it was easy. Carrots are one of the few foods that should not be pureed with the cooking water. It may have too many nitrates. So, I cooked the carrots first, then pureed with fresh water. They taste great. Part of the reason I am doing this is because I put aside a little for myself, then I get my nutrition, too and it is better than snacking on french fries!!!

I made my own carrots too (despite my ped telling me not to)... let me tell you they taste MUCH better than the store bought carrots.. DS would not touch the store bought carrots and loved the home made ones!

Apparently there is a concern with nitrates in carrots. What is interesting is that some peds will tell you to not make your own carrots because of this and other peds will look at you like you are crazy!
My ped told me that when they make carrots for baby food, they somehow take the nitrates out. However if you read the article on that web site I gave you, they tell you that there is no way to really take the nitrates out. So, I chose to try and make my own with organic carrots and like the previous poster said, use fresh water to thin them out (not the water that you boil or steam them in).
Also, the article recommended waiting until 6 months to feed home made carrots because at that time the digestive system is fully formed and they can handle any nitrates from the carrots better! Hope that helps!
