Re: Main Dish salad
one of my favorite main dish salads is one I ate mostly in Switzerland called a (and please pardon the horrible spelling..it's from memory ) Germichster Salat mit kase.
it's basically a mixed salad with cheese (most likely emmentaler) but it's set up so nicely.
it was a large base of mixed greens, then in the corners/on the sides it had piles of fresh corn, cold roasted beets (which I HATED until I ate them in this salad), cold boiled potato slices, hard boiled egg, chopped tomato and cucumber, shredded red cabbage.
in the center it would have the kase (cheese) and sometimes wurst (whichever kind, usually cervelat, dh's fav!)
it was coupled with a light but creamy herbed vinaigrette. but you could dress it with anything.
anyway, I love this salad. I am planning on making it soon since dh bought some bratwurst recently.

Re: Main Dish salad
Grilled chicken, romaine, carrots, celery, corn, black beans, buffalo sauce as dressing or a spicy southwest vinagrette.
Marinated steak tips, romaine, red onion, feta, pepperoncini, carrots, Greek dressing.

Re: Main Dish salad
I make my own version of an Asian Steak Salad. I use romaine lettuce, shredded carrots, cucumbers and slivered almonds and top with marinated steak slices and carrot ginger dressing (you can find in the produce section of Waldbaums).
I also make a chicken salad using romaine, cucumbers, craisins, goat cheese and toasted pecans. I top with chicken marinated in honey mustard dressing -- and make a "cheat version" vinagrette by taking bottled honey mustard dressing (which is generally too sweet for me alone) and mix with balsamic vinegar -- the mix is probably 85% Honey Mustard Dressing and 15% balsamic. I have used this dressing for a lot of different holidays and people love it.

Re: Main Dish salad
Well.. I 'make' it into a salad.. but Rob and the kids don't.
When I make Greek style chicken and Greek salad, I serve it with toasted pita and lemon rice pilaf for the family, but I usually eat it as a salad!
Salad is thinly sliced red onion, grape tomatoes, cucumber, spinach and romaine mixed, Calamata olives and feta cheese chunks. I dress it with red wine vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, Greek Seasoning, Salt & Pepper. Chicken is cubes of chicken marinated in lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and Greek seasoning and then grilled on skewers. I put my salad on the plate and throw the chicken on top. Delicious.
Sometimes I actually put a tablespoon or 2 of the lemon rice pilaf and toss it into the salad - and I almost always scoop some salad onto the pita toast when eating.

sounds yummy. and you did pretty good on the spelling : it's Gemischter Salat
My fav is Giada's Warm Vegetable Salad (potatoes, string beans, red peppers) in a vinaigrette. I serve it as a side to a variety of meats ( cutlets, kielbasa, wursts, burgers) then serve some nice sliced tomatoes on the side.
Leftovers taste even better.
