Mailboxes at the curb...
DH put in a new mailbox. as you can see we have problems growing grass over there (we get too much shade from the big stupid town's tree)
So I was thinking of planting flowers around it and make a little garden. what would look good AND grow in the shade???

I think Hostas grow well in the shade. They are low maintenance and get fuller each season. You just have to cut them down in the fall, in the spring they come back and look great.

thanks! I think I already have one of those. that pic was taken today at 1130, so you can tell I get no sun over there. my next mission is to try and grow grass

impatients will do well in the shade. they are annuals though, so you have to replant each year.

Re: Mailboxes at the curb...
Because of all the road salt, and whatever else comes off the road, we have a large section in the front yard near the mailbox that doesn't want to grow anything. Instead of fighting it, I just went with it. Marked off a border with stones, and filled it in with woodchips. Makes it look nicer, and it looks like I intentionally don't want anything to grow there... (of course, now I have to spray or pull the weeds that keep growing there.... ) Marble chips would also be a nice ground cover. I have other areas of the yard with the white marble chips.

Re: Mailboxes at the curb...
The previous owners put a wall of slate around the mailbox so it is like a planter. This way salt and dirt can't get in it and it looks pretty.

Re: Mailboxes at the curb...
Hostas are good but you could try ferns too. I'd amend the soil a little though so it's not compacted.
