What program is equivalent to Word? Does it come already installed on the laptop or do I have to download it?

Pages is the equivalent for Word, but it doesn't come pre-installed. You have to buy it separately. It's not expensive and it also comes with two other programs (Keynote & Numbers), which are the equivalent to Power Point and Excel.
I purchased it when I first got my macbook only to end up buying MS Office anyway, because I found it to be a bad substitute and a lot of my files didn't have the proper conversion when sending stuff to PC users.

Bought Microsoft Office & had them install it at the Apple store when I got the Macbook Pro a few months ago.

I got Office too. But you can get Pages from the app store, it is similar.

I use Word on my mac, though Google Documents is a great (free) alternative that I like as well.
