M&J's 5 month ped visit - and a CIO question.
Both babies are doing great - J is 10lbs and 23 in, M is 10.4lbs and 22 inches. Still my little peanuts!
I spoke to the ped about our sleeping issues and he said that M is now waking up all the time because she's learning it from J , although she slept great last night - went down at 7:30, got up at 2 to eat then at 4 because she pooped and then slept till 10.
He said to let J CIO - to leave him for an hour?? That seems really excessive to me. Not to go in for an hour and let him scream like I know he will, does it really work?

I don't know anything about CIO, but 1 hour does seem very excessive to me.
Glad to hear though how well they are doing!

Re: M&J's 5 month ped visit - and a CIO question.
I could be wrong, but I thought most CIO advocates talk about a graduated approach instead of just letting DC cry until he or she passes out from exhaustion. You let DC cry for 5 or 10 minutes, then go in and soothe DC (pat DC's back and sssssh). You keep increasing the time you let DC cry until hopefully DC falls asleep.
Letting DC cry for an hour without going in seems excessive to me, but I think the graduated approach of going in and soothing DC may not work for some. Do you have any of the sleep training books like Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child?

Some CIO advocates talk about doing CIO that way, but that doesn't work for every baby. It did not for my DS, we had to put him in and make a run for it.
I think an hour at that age is excessive, and I will tell you that we tried it at 5 months and failed, and weren't successful until he was 1.

Re: M&J's 5 month ped visit - and a CIO question.
As a successful user of CIO, 1 hour does seem excessive. I did use CIO at about 5 months and luckily never had to go past 20 minutes.
Why don't you try doing just 15 minutes and see how you feel. I think that an hour at 5 months old is too long, for both of you.
ETA: I personally feel CIO does work. BUT, I think every child/parent threshold is different and there's no one way to do it. If you want I can FM you how I did it. I'm sure you'll get 10 different repsonses on how CIO worked for different children. The main key is CONSISTENCY!!

Re: M&J's 5 month ped visit - and a CIO question.
We did CIO at 5 1/2 months because ds was getting up 5 times a night and it wasn't for hunger each time.
It was so hard, but necesarry to do for various reasons.
The first night my son cried for an hour and 40 minutes (on and off). Unfortunately i'm a believer that if you're going to do it, you have to do it full force otherwise it won't work. Or you'll just teach them to cry for an hour and that's all it takes for you to come in.
The 2nd night, he only woke up once in which we fed him at that time. So one night was all it took at that time.
It's hard, but totally worth it. Now i think my child goes against the norm because he is the champion crier and most other stories i hear... it's never that long.

Agreed, the graduated approach with DS just made him cry more, get more upset and really was counter productive as it was like I was teasing him, we had to go cold turkey for it to work!
But I agree with Kate, I think at 5 months that alot of crying! I didnt feel comfortable trying CIO until DS was a year and at that point I did let him cry for 1 hour and 15 minutes straight the first night. That was the only night he cried for more than 30 minutes.
I dont have much advice as DS was a great sleeper from birth-9 months then we hit our rough patch and the only thing that worked for us was CIO.
