Lunch ideas please?

What can I pack DS for lunch? He is a very picky eater. He will eat turkey and cheese and grilled cheese sandwiches. Other than that it is only PB&J which is discouraged in school. Has anyone made grilled cheese and sent it in? Does it stay ok? I am at a loss. He does like pasta so maybe I could get him a thermos and put pasta in it. I know if I send him in with lunch money he is going to eat a bagel/pizza everyday. So I would like to send him in with lunch 2 or 3 times a week and I am at a loss here.

TIA!!!

If he eats turkey and cheese I would send him with that every day. I send mine with what they like and I let them pick out the sandwich so I know they will want it come lunch time. We can give them pb so it does make life easier. Mine eat pbj, pb and bananas, turkey and cheese and tuna normally.

Re: Lunch ideas please?

My kids like mini bagels with cream cheese or jelly (or Nutella which isn't allowed their classes due to allergies) but I guess that's not helpful because he can buy that at school.

My son started being more picky about what he eats for lunch. He take the same thing almost every day. If your son likes something - give it to him every day. At least turkey sandiches are healthy. I know I worry he will get bored and then what will I send? but I guess I will deal with it when I have to.

Pasta in his thermos -everyday for my son. And his preference - is Chef Boy R Dee - gross I know but he loves it and so easy to get ready in the morning. He either takes that or a sandwich of turkey (very little 1-2 slices), slice of cheese and sliced olives (he thinks my house is subway) on pita bread. He likes the lunchable make your own pizza too - but now he has gotten nervous because I guess they are not suppose to drop things on the floor while they eat and he is afraid to even drop one little piece of cheese.

In the past he has taken - salami rolled up, turkey rolled up and crackers on the side, pizza bites in his thermos. I know a lot of kids in his class take chicken nuggets in his thermos.

PB&J sandwich
PB&J on crackers
(IMO, PB&J is a staple... I know, peanut allergies, but thats why most schools have peanut free tables)
Turkey and cheese sandwiches
Turkey rolled up with hummus
Chicken nuggets (if you wrap them in aluminum foil, they stay somewhat warm)

My kids school is completely peanut free, so no PB&J sandwiches, which my kids love Chat Icon

My kids will take
jelly sandwiches
turkey or ham sandwiches
rolled up turkey with Ritz crackers and a cheese stick

they can buy a hot or cold lunch plan each day, so on days he likes what's on the menu, he buys his lunch.

I make grilled cheese 2 - 3 times a week! DS LOVES it! I make it in the morning, wrap it in foil and he says he eats it Chat Icon. He is in pre-school so usually if he doesn't eat something it gets sent back home...

I understand that most people don't really understand the effect peanut allergies have on these kids, but imagine your child has to sit at a table by themselves every.single.day at school because of other children bringing peanut butter in.

When DD (in K) eats lunch there is a table with about 6-7 kids who have allergies. Its tough!

Re: Lunch ideas please?

For you moms who can't send pb&j to school.....

Trader Joe's has Sunflower Seed Butter. It has the same sort of consistency and color as peanut butter but it's a seed, not a nut and made in a soy factory.

Pair it with jelly and voila!!!

I send ds in with this 2X a week. I just made sure to let his teacher know what it was.

We also give him no sugar added apple butter and pear butter sandwiches, sometimes with sliced banana as a special treat

At my kids school, the peanut-free table is full. There are about 10 kids there. So no one is eating alone.

So true, I am going to feel so bad for my daughter when she goes to school and has to sit at the peanut free table. Chat Icon

Thanks for all the ideas. I think I am going to invest in the thermos. He doesn't eat chicken nuggets but he does like pasta. At least I can mix it up a bit. I sent him in with grilled cheese yesterday and he liked it and asked for it again.

I couldn't find a Thermos container for food in Target, so I just ordered 2 off Amazon. Definitely worth the $15 investment.

I know at our school district (which is small) they only have about 7-8 kids who have allergies and all at different lunch times. My BFF's son had to sit by himself all 3 years he was there.

Re: Lunch ideas please?

Bella eats in her classroom, so it's peanut free.

But there is also the issue of a sesame seed, dairy, tree nut, and egg allergies. It seems to be a major issue.

Re: Lunch ideas please?

Thanks for asking! I've been looking for new ideas too.

Does your son eat cottage cheese? I'll send DD with a cup of cottage cheese & some fruit.

Also, our district has a peanut free table (it's a whole class), but in addition, if a kid brings peanut butter, that child has to move to a table in the center away from everyone. So the kids eating PB are isolated, not the kids with the allergy.
