I had my 1 hour glucose test last week and I guess my platelets were low. I failed by 5 points so I had to take the 3 hour on Wed. Well, I guess the retested my platelets at that time and they are below the normal range. My dr office said they should be over 140 and mine are 113 so while not terribly low they want me to see a hematologist. Anyone else have this? There isn't much you can do for it other than monitor it I guess? I didn't really get to ask any questions other than will it effect the baby to which she said no.

My friend recently went through this or something similar. Yes, go to the hematologist. They will monitor you. One issue that she was possibly facing was no epi during labor. I think her issue is resolved or her numbers are not dropping as rabidly. But go.

My mom had low platelets for other reasons but yes, see a hematologist. Although at these levels, he will probably test you once a month. Someone i would highly recommend is Dr.Stark in Great Neck...also, we bought a fairly pricey papaya leaf extract juice from amazon. This seemed to help a ton for her.

Just went through the exact same thing. They found that my platelets were low during my glucose test. I saw a hematologist every 2 weeks or so to make sure that my numbers either stayed stable or dropped.

If they drop, they might put you on a steroid to make them rise towards the end. I had a c section so they wanted to make sure my numbers were adequate enough. I think they ended up being 111 or 112 the day of my surgery which I fine for any type of delivery.

They just don't want them dropping below 80 or 90. If you have any questions, feel free to FM me. My DD is 7 weeks so I just went through it.

Yes, I had low platelets, anemia, and I have an iron deficiancy. I saw a hemotologist. I saw Dr. Rubin in Bayshore, she was very nice and spoke with my OB a few times so they could be on the same page with treatment. I needed a blood transfusion and iv iron towards the end of my pregnancy (for the anemia/iron deficiancy - not the low platelets).

When I went to L & D I made sure to tell the nurse about the low platelets and anemia in case they needed to give me blood.

Thanks everyone! I was referred to North Shore Hematology and have an appt for Tuesday. Seems they are not terribly low but I guess because of the c-section they want to monitor it. Do you just go for blood tests? Do you think they do blood work there or do they send to a lab? I should have asked that question but I guess I'll find out on Tuesday. Thanks again!

I go to North Shore Hematology (see Dr. Theodorakis).. They are wonderful there. I see him for a gene mutation that causes clots so it's different but their standard procedure in there is that every time you see the doctor, they do blood work. They have their own lab so they draw the blood right there.. Something's they test for they can run themselves and others they send out to a lab.. I've been a patient there for 3 years and I would never change and always recommend people. Good luck to you!

I went there also. I saw Dr. Kim. She was great. Not overly concerned with my numbers, bc they pretty much stabilized the entire time. They will take your blood in office and test it there and you will get your numbers when the dr sees you. Good luck!

Eta- I only developed this when I was pg. I never had any prior problems with blood or platelets before pregnancy

I forget when in my pregnancy they started to drop below average but not dangerously low - i think it was early 2nd tri. they were just below 120 i think at that point. i wasn't referred to a hematologist ever. my blood was drawn on my due date and it was discovered that my platelets had dropped significantly, to the 60s. they ran additional tests and diagnosed HELLP syndrome. i was admitted and had to have the baby asap. the platelets dropping was my only symptom. otherwise i felt totally fine and normal, no other HELLP symptoms. scary, but worked out ok!
