Low Platelet Count

I got a call from my obgyn's office today that my platelet count is low and I need to get my blood retested. I did some research online and am not expecting a different outcome. I seem to have some of the classic symptoms like bruising easily, excessive gum bleeding, and nosebleeds.

I was told if that's the case, I will be referred to a hematologist for monitoring. Anyone else been through this? Just wondering what to expect.

I just reached the 20 week mark and even though I've been feeling and doing well, I've had all these issues come up in the past month. It's been hard and I'm really tired and just hoping LO is healthy. I'm trying not to get down but it's hard.

Yes! I have ITP which is a common cause of low platelets. My ITP is chronic however it is not uncommon to have it only during pregnancy. The hematologist will want to monitor your platelets and likely send you for a lot of tests to determine the cause. Do you know your exact numbers? To have an epidural, your platelets have to be above 50, but there are options if they go below it. I have a great hematologist in West Islip. Let me know if you have any questions!!!

Thanks for replying! I don't know my #s. I'm going for additional blood work this Friday and have an obgyn appt next Friday, when I'm guessing they will go over things with me.

I would love your dr recommendation. I appreciate it. My obgyn is in West Islip too so that would work nicely.

Interesting and completely frightening that I may not be able to have an epidural. Chat Icon

My fear and concern is for baby and just that I deliver a healthy LO. I guess some initial questions are whether it hinders you in any way, are in any pain, or if it can cause or lead to other things.

Thanks so much. It's nice to hear from someone else on this.

I understand, I was scared when I first got my diagnosis and I wasn't even pregnant! I wouldn't worry about the epidural quite yet, though it is scary there are plenty of women with low platelets who are able to get it as normal. I am still hoping to get it.

Honestly, other than having to go to the hematologist, I would never even know there was something wrong with me. I do bruise easier than most, but thats the most severe way it has impacted my life, so not much at all! I have never had any kind of pain from it. I've had it for 20 years and I've had not a single issue. Unless they go extremely low, which is very rare, it's a pretty uneventful thing to have.

The best part is that it will not affect the baby at all! Exhale a little haha. My hematologist is Dr. Sygaco , he is great. Good luck and feel free to FM me. It's great to have someone to relate to Chat Icon
