Losing Teeth at 3?
First off, hello to everyone. I haven't been on in a while!
DD had her first dentist appointment today. I was concerned about her top front tooth since it seems to have moved quite a bit in a short amount of time, so I wanted the Dr to look at it.
He says, "She's only 3, right? This tooth is loose."
So he does an x-ray of the top front 4 teeth and asks me if she fell at any point and hit her mouth. She's never fallen on her face, not even as a baby.
Turns out the root is dead and so are the roots of the teeth on either side of this one, so three in total. He said he'd never seen this on a kid who hadn't hit their face on something.
Long story short, all three of those teeth will fall out before her 4th birthday and she'll be toothless for like 2 years, until her adult teeth grown in
Has anyone had this happen to their DC or heard of this? I'm just nervous that her other teeth will go the same path.
She has to go back in 6 months to make sure no other teeth are doing the same thing.

Re: Losing Teeth at 3?
Ive never heard of that at all...
DS fractured the root of one of his teeth a couple of weeks ago. It may or may not have to be removed. We are keeping our fingers crossed...
Can the dentist see signs of an old injury at all?

Re: Losing Teeth at 3?
How lose are they? I believe that my DS's teeth have shifted since we took away the paci but they do not feel lose at all.
I hate to say it but I would at least inquire about whether there is a need to look into hormonal reasons. Some kids are going through milestones earlier because of chemicals and pesticides in foods (not that you did anything wrong but it is a fact of American life). With the roots being dead I would seriously doubt this but I'd ask.
Oh, another thing I would do no matter what is to let the ped. know and get their opinion.

Re: Losing Teeth at 3?
Thanks for the replies
I was thinking about calling the ped tomorrow and asking if she's heard of this.
The dentist (who I saw since I was a kid and who also sees my parents and grandma) said he's at a loss.
He was asking about pacifiers and bottles too, but I took the pacifier away at 11 months old and she was done with the bottle by a year old.
I'm just so nervous that this is going to happen to all her other teeth since there is no reason this happened to these 3.
The one tooth is pretty loose. He said it will fall out within the next month or two. The others aren't as far along but the roots are dead.
So this makes me wonder. If all the roots didn't die at the same time, could this happen to her other teeth in time?
I also just realized that by the time she has to be a flower girl in my sister's wedding next year, she's going to be missing all those teeth.
I'm just so confused. I'm definitely going to call the ped tomorrow.

Re: Losing Teeth at 3?
Both my niece & nephew lost their baby teeth at 4. They were early teethers they got their baby teeth at 3 months.
I am pretty sure their big teeth came in shortly after they lost their baby teeth.

Re: Losing Teeth at 3?
She wasn't an early teether. She got her bottom teeth in at 7 or 8 months old, and actually her two top front teeth were the last to come in before her molars. She looked like a vampire for a while, lol.
The ped took all day to call me back. She left me a message saying to get a second opinion which ticked me off since my question to her was, "Have YOU ever heard of this?" Thanks for not answering my question.
Time to google!

Re: Losing Teeth at 3?
does your child take vitamins with flouride
i would want to get a second opinion to make sure that nothing will happen to the adult teeth - you don't want roots dieing there - it is one thing to loose the teeth early as a child but adult teeth are a lot more important
the toothless smile is adorable on kids
