Losing my mind...
Or at least I feel like I am.
My 3.5 year old has been, um, "challenging" (for lack of better word). I dont get it. He yells, talks back, throws things, doesnt listen, fights us on everything from getting dressed to going to bed. He always had great sleep habits before, but I dont know what happened all of a sudden. He gets out of bed constantly. Tonight he did not stay in bed until 9:44 and hes been waking up at 7! Plus he is not taking naps consistently. He was doing better when he had rails on his bed, but he broke one and his bed is so big we have not replaced it yet because he sleeps in the middle and isn't restless.
I have tried everything from sticker charts to time outs to reward systems for his behavior. He will be fine for a while and then gets moody for no reason and it lasts. I have asked him if hes sad, mad, misses mommy or daddy. He just seems like he doesnt know whats wrong either. I have tried to get him to sleep better by lowering the lights, reducing TV, playing soft music, singing to him, laying with him...you name it. I actually went as far as calling the ped today because I want to get blood work done (he is slightly picky with eating and wasnt sure if maybe a vitamin deficiency was the culprit.
Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions? Is this "normal"? I feel like its not at this point.

I have no advice but that is my 3.5 year old to a "t" i was told this is typical 3 year old behavior and eventually he will grow out of it.
The only thing that works for us is a timeout or he loses something for the day like a certain toy or tv. He usually stops for the day but its right back to it the next day.

So Im not alone? Lately Ive been feeling like such a failure. Im reading on babycenter about sleep time struggles, and it seems useful (and they say its normal for a preschooler to have these issues with bedtime too). I wonder if the behavior is because he is so tired.

Have you tried adjusting his diet? Removing gluten? Reducing sugar? Dairy? Or maybe bring him to speak with someone. Has anything happened recently? Any events over the last year or 2?

Re: Losing my mind...
My 4 year old is very similar. It might be that your DS is outgrowing naps?
Trying a multivitamin might help too - my Ped told me once that an iron deficiency could cause bad behavior. He suggested that I get liquid poly vi sol vitamins with iron and see if it helped. I try to put it in his water or even orange juice because it masks the flavor better.
Here is an article about iron deficiency in kids. http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/heart/ida.html#
