Loose BM - TMI
So Ms Emma was on Amox. for an ear infection 12 days before we went to Cayman. In the airport she had an accident in her pants (mind you she is 5 1/2). Ever since then it has been loose and when she poops it is like a mound in the toilet. She cant pass gas without having accidents. I have gotten her so many new pairs of undies.
My question - Does this sounds like lactose intolerance? Is it from the antibiotic?
I've spoken to the ped and he said it MAY be temp lactose intolerance from the antibiotic. But to give her 1 tsp of Benefiber 1x a day for a week and see if it improves. She has no other symptoms. No cramps, no fever, no feeling sick, no loss of appetite.
ETA: I did give her rice 2 days ago and for the 1st time in a while it was normal but then today it was back to not normal.
Thoughts?

Re: Loose BM - TMI
I'm soo sorry, poor little girl
Wait, so your giving her benefiber for a loose stool? Did i read that right?
Benefiber works as a stool softner, keeps you regular and soft (i used to take alot of it myself unfortunately
) I don't understand why the PED would want you to give a fiber/stool softener to harden up her bms. That wouldn't make her stool harder, it would make it more loose.
If it were me, I'd stop the benefiber. It'll take 2-3 days to fully work it's way out.
If she still isn't better i'd take her back to the doc, maybe something she took back from cayman is getting her sick.
I'm soo sorry I hope you guys figure it out soon for her

Steven, who is only 15 months, had something similar. Every single time he passed gas, you could hear the water coming out of his little hiney
I think it most likely has to do with the antibiotics, or maybe she has a stomach bug.
Just to be safe, try giving her Lactaid for the next few days. Or soy milk instead of regular milk.
Hope she feels better

I said the same thing to the Ped about the Benefiber. He said it is usually used for constipation but it can actually be used to make her regular and make them less watery.

Hmmm Benefiber works by pulling water to the intestines to combat constipation. That's confuses me. But i'm not a doctor.
How's she doing today and last night?

Re: Loose BM - TMI
I would nix the Benefiber and maybe get some yogurt into her routine. If she is already eatign yogurt, make sure it has active cultures. Ammoxicillin is notorious for causing bowel issues b/c it does not "know" the difference between good bacteria and bad, and the good bacteria in the colon actually regualtes their Bowel Movements and absorption. Yogurt with active cultures has the good bacteria that can restore proper bowel function during and after antibiotics.
No offense to your ped, of course.
Hope she feels well soon

Re: Loose BM - TMI
I did my own research on the Benefiber last night. said the small amount (1 tsp per day) will bulk up the stool which may help her. He also wants me to increase the fat in her diet. He's got the medical degree not me.
I did get some yogurt being delivered tonight... getting her to eat it is going to be another thing.
