Looks like I'll be a SAHM!!
After much discussion with DH, we have decided that its in the best interest of our child that I stay home with him/her for at least the first year of her/his life....
It will be tough going from a double income family to a single but it's what best for our child....
When is a good time to tell my bosses? Can I still be covered under my insurance for a few months if I pay the premium (I think its called COBRA)....can I get disability?
Anyone know? TIA.

You can still be covered under insurance but you would have to pay the entire cost of the policy. Not just what they deduct now. COBRA is very
I don't think you can file for disability if you tell your employer you are not going back to work.
This is the problem I have at the moment. I am planning on staying home at least 6 months after the baby is born. But, if I tell my boss I am not coming back I am not entitled to short term disability since technically I'll be unemployed.

Re: Looks like I'll be a SAHM!!
we're doing the same thing! im so scared of the finances but i know somehow we're gonna make it work
now i know while u get disability u get ur insurance but when that dies out then i believe the insurance does too, but i dont know how long that would take ....cobra i know u dont even need a job, its very expensive though. i remember when i graduated college and didnt have a job my parents had to do that for me and it was something like 300something a month
sorry that i dont know more....but i also think every job has its own requirements etc so u really should look into it

I wouldn't say ANYTHING to anyone until you have had the baby and your maternity leave is up. You do not want to screw yourself over.
So just keep quiet about your plans and play it off as though you plan on coming back.

I wouldn't do it meanly, just tell them after your maternity leave is up that you just can't bear the thought to leave DC at this young age. Tell them how much you've loved working there and would love to return in the future if they had an opening. Make it like it was a last minute decision, not something you'd been planning for months.

Sounds like we are in the same boat... our plan is for me to be a SAHM but I am not telling my job that. As far as they are concerned I am coming back. I don't want to screw myself. I am sure there are people out there that say they are going back to work but then change their minds because they can't leave their babies.
I currently bring home the health insurance for DH and I and so we will be paying for Cobra for 18 months (which I think will be about $600-$800 a month for ours) and then getting our own health insurance and paying out of pocket... scary thought of how much this will be costing us, not to mention the loss of my salary... and that the economy seems to be in the toliet!!! Just keeping my fingers crossed that things work out!

Totally wait it out and don't tell them you are not coming back until Maternity leave is OVER. I did this (sort-of) last time and it worked GREAT!

Absolutely. I totally agree. I plan on being a SAHM and in my meeting with HR if you go out on FMLA then after that say you are not coming back their are penalties. If you tell them you dont plan on coming back then you wont be covered under FMLA or get ST disability.
So it's basically damned if you do damned if you dont. I dont plan on telling anyone my intentions and just playing it off as though I am coming back

I agree! Most women in my office tell their bosses the week before they are due to come back.
First this gives you time in case you change your mind, second you built up your maternity benefits you deserve to collect them
Most bosses expect that there is a possibility that a mother may not return after their leave. You wont be burning bridges.
Honestly I knew after 8 weeks that I didnt want to be a SAHM. I would love to work part time but right now I am doing full time because I love my job and figuring out what works best for our family. (DS is with family during the day)
