Looking for suggestions for two different outing scenarios
Firstly, my husband and I are looking to do some sort of fun mini vacation with our kids at some point over the next two weeks. Looking for something local-ish (within a 2 hour drive or so) and not terribly expensive, maybe for an overnight or two. We have 3 kids, ages 7, 5, and 3. They all love LOVE animals and nature, so it would be nice to incorporate that. The idea of camping has come up, just looking for some other things to consider.
Secondly, my best friend and I are looking to do a day out with our kids next week. We were discussing maybe a day in NYC. What are good things to do there? Open to other options besides NYC as well. Between us, we have two 7 year old boys, a 5 year old boy, and a 3 year old boy and girl.
TIA for any suggestions!

For the day trip, how about the Bronx Zoo? Check out the membership options. It may be cheaper to get the annual pass instead of just paying for the day.

Thanks, we are actually already members and go there a few times a year usually. For the day trip, we were thinking more along the lines of cool kids museums, fun unique attractions, that kind of thing.

What about the museum of natural history for the day trip? I would love to take my 5yo there.

Re: Looking for suggestions for two different outing scenarios
Mini vacation: I'd go upstate and check out some hiking. New Paltz has some great trails and has hotels that are reasonably priced in case you didn't want to do camping. If you do want to camp, check out the New York State campground site (reserve America). Maybe you can find a place near horseback riding.
NYC: Statue of Liberty is cool and battery park city has so much to see. Alternatively, love museum of natural history and Central Park.

There is an alpaca farm in CT where you can stay overnight. Looks like fun for kids. Since they love animals it might be a good choice.

This is about 3-1/2 hrs but I know someone that went with their kids and raved about it. May be worth looking into.

Governor's Island is great. Slides, bikes, hammocks, play fountains, great view of the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan, mini golf, National Parks castle to tour...love it there. Best of all, it's only like $2 for the ferry ride

Re: Looking for suggestions for two different outing scenarios
For the NYC outing, I'm a huge fan of the NYC transit museum in Brooklyn. It's so hands-on and the old subway cars are really cool. It's close enough to brooklyn bridge park, where there's some paths, playground stuff, and a carousel (assuming it's still there - I haven't made it down there in a year or two).
