Looking for a meetup group...

I'm currently on maternity leave and not sure when I'll be returning back to work..looks like Sept. So I'm looking for a meetup group to meet other mommies in the area once the weather gets nice. I have a 6, 4 and 2.5 month old

I don't like that you have to pay to be a member of meet up. I found I did better meeting other moms on this site, Facebook, and by taking my son to Gymboree classes. Now he has a little group of friends and I am friendly with the moms. He's invited to a birthday party for one of the kids Saturday :)

Looking for a meetup group...

I belong to both Gymboree and a Meetup group. I have met and become friends with many more people through meetup then Gymboree. Both are great for socializing with children but since you have 3 kids it would be more economical to join a meetup because Gymboree is about $120 a month for one kid. I am sure there is a family rate.

I belong to a great meetup group! Love the girls and all the kids!

I belong to a mommy & me group and there's not always a need to charge members. If you decide to join a mu group, it's a good choice! It's great meeting new mommies and their little ones, especially if they're close in age.

Btw, u don't always have to pay for Gymboree, u can sign up for free classes.

Didn't know you had to pay to have a meet up group, but I still dont want to pay for something like that. I know many people enjoy it and have met great friends (like you, since your group seems pretty successful) it's just not for me and was giving another opinion. This is what worked for me, everyone does their own thing ;)

I've never paid anything for the meet up group I'm in. Some specific events have a small fee but I've only done free ones.

I guess it depends on the organizer.. I can understand why some charge, because it costs the organizer $ to renew the meetup group every 6 months I believe. Some organizers also charge $ to get more of a commitment from their members to attend events.

I think it depends on how many members are in the group and if Meetup considers it a large group or something like that.

Looking for a meetup group...

I'm in a meetup group and haven't had to pay. Does it depend on the group? I haven't been to anything yet bc the events don't seem to work for my schedule.

Actually meetup charges all organizers regardless of their size but what some organizers charge to belong to their group def don't reflect meetup fees, some organizers fees are way higher. The groups that decide not to charge their members might pay meetup fees out of their own pocket, through contributions, or through sponsors.

Yes, exactly. It covers the meeting costs to run the group and encourages only active members. I'd rather have a solid group of 75 or so than a group of 400.

Re: Looking for a meetup group...

There is a meetup that I am in that is free!!!

Mom and Tots

The group is great and very welcoming. I have been to several meetups. Most of the meetups are done at free venues too.

Keep in mind that u'll never see a group in which every single member participates, no matter how small a group can be.

My best advise would be try different meetup groups and see which one it's a better fit for u. Just like others have suggested, local FB groups are also a great way to meet moms.

Beyond groups... The way I've met most moms is just by walking around the neighborhood & going to parks & saying "hi". I WFT & when on maternity leave, I met even more at the local coffee shops. I get people's numbers. Most are very happy to meet up.

Now a bunch of us get together every few months.

Yes I made a few friends over the summer that way. Just making small talk at the park.

Meetup charges ALL organizers. I honestly did not find it success. People were VERY flaky. I think some people just join to join too, which is annoying. I met one mom through meetup and we started a local FB group and mainly have met moms by going to activities like Library classes, yoga, etc. We have about 5-10 active moms in our FB group now. I think it's tougher when you have multiple kids at different ages though.

Re: Looking for a meetup group...

When my first son was born 7 years ago, I joined a meetup. After a while the meetup fizzled, but we still remained friends....Some of them are my closest friends. It was so nice to have friends and support while I was going through first time mom things. I kinda miss that relationship for my second son.
