long vent leaking shower.
Last week we noticed that our shower stall was leaking. We thought it was a plumbing problem so we called our plumber. He is completely backed up with Sandy issues. He had us run some tests. Based on these tests we no longer think it is a plumbing issue. Now we are thinking that it is a compromised lead shower pan. Our house is almost 100 but I don't think the shower is part of the original bathroom. The shower floor is tiled. The frustrating part in this whole situation is that it is our only "shower" in the house. There is a separate tub with a shower head but it is only used as a tub. The tiling does not go up the whole wall and there is no door or curtain on the tub. We cannot find a way to enclose it to use it as a shower right now. Also frustrating is the fact that we plan on doing this bathroom over in the next three years. We just moved in this spring and after many "surprises" we do not have the money to do it this year. I'm hoping I can call our handy man today and he can come up with a temporary fix for us. If not, I'm not even sure who to call or what to do In just three weeks we are having DH's big crazy Hawaiian family descend upon us. I'm sure they'll love the showering conditions.

Can you get a curtain for the other tub and just use that for now?
It also could be the grout or the caulking

We can get a curtain for the tub but the walls are painted, the tiling ends just above the tub. I'm afraid that the wall is going to get too wet. It could be the grout but the more we read the more DH thinks it is the basin. We did pull up any loose grout and we are going to try it out this weekend b/c it would be such a cheap fix. I wish I could be optimistic but I think it may be a bigger problem.

What about one of the oval curtain rods for the clawfoot tubs? It will cover the walls and can attach to the wall or ceiling.

That's exactly what we tried last night. We cannot connect the ceiling stabilizer to b/c the ceiling is too high.

long vent leaking shower.
I can totally relate to your situation. Our master bathroom shower was leaking and causing a wet spot on our living room ceiling. We had a plumber come and "fix" the problem. A month later, more leaking. Had it "fixed" again and it came back again. We had like 3 plumbers look at it and had problems for over a year. We finally retiled the whole shower stall and had a tiled floor put in. The guy who was redoing the shower said he would not use a copper/lead pan because of the leaking issues; he would only redo the shower if we tiled the floor too.
And then... 2 months after having a whole new shower (tile + shower head + mixing valve), there was another wet spot on our living room ceiling. The guy came back and regrouted the shower... so far it's been a few months and holding strong. I may blow a gasket if it leaks again!!!
Leaking water is a pain... it is often difficult to find the cause. Water can travel along pipes/beams pretty far and then drip down so the cause could not even be nearby.

Re: long vent leaking shower.
You can get a temporary bar and cheap curtain and hang it on the wall side to proteact that side. Additionally you could take cheqp dollar store plastic curtains and tape them up as a temp fix. It would work for a short time just so you have a working shower.
Also you could get a hose with a shower head this way you could sit in the tub and shower or at least have some control over the spray.
I feel your frustration. We have one full bath and we have a shower in our tub. The old owners put in a jetted tub. Well it is leaking even when we shower so we had to tape up the jets and are trying to get everything set up for a new tub/shower. Of course since it was a huge tub it is a huge job to redo everything. It is an expense we didn't expect bc it was a newer bathroom.
The plumber suggested the above with the curtains which is why I thought of it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We are going to try out some "cheap fixes" this weekend.
