Long Flight with 1 year old, is this nuts?

My sister, who lives in California, has a time share in Hawaii. They asked us to go with them next year. There are 3 different options for travel going there. Any way we go, its long. The baby will be 13 months old at this point. Has anyone taken a long trip with a 1 year old? Im afraid of 2 flights each way adding up to like 14 hours of travel each way!!!!!! Is this a bad idea? I appreciate any advice..

Nope, not nuts at all, I have taken my 19 month old on transatlantic flights 3 times, once at 4 months, once at 7 months (by myself) and another time with my husband at 14 months. It was fine.

I haven't flown anywhere with the kids yet but I just wanted to let you know that their are direct flights out of Newark airport to HI. It is close for me now since I live in NJ but even living on LI to me it is worth it to not have a layover and not having to get on and off a plane. The flight is 11 hours going and I believe 10 coming back.

We already said we would go but then I starting thinking! I guess we will try it and see how it goes. The flight from Newark was one of the options but we will still have to take a 2nd flight to the final location, of course it cant be simple!

Thanks for the help ladies

We are taking Baby G to CA in Feb. It is a 6 hour flight. We will talk to the Ped to see what we can do to make the flight easier & more comfortable for him, and also to see what we can do to keep him from screaming for hours.....Chat Icon

Re: Long Flight with 1 year old, is this nuts?

my daughter is adopted from China and we had to fly home with her. we took a straight flight from Bejing to Newark and it was 16 hours. She was 18 months old at the time, and she did great. We actually got compliments from the other passangers on how good she was they did not even know there was a baby on the flight. I would suggest getting bulkhead seats if you can and getting the baby her own seat. They gave us a lot of pillows and blankets and we were able to lay her down because of the extra space in bulkhead and she slept for a good 8 hours of the flight, and with the extra seat she could sit and play and we were all comfortable

My story is very similar except my son is from Russia adopted at 19 mos - he did great. We bought him a seat and were lucky enough to have row of 4 to ourselfs so we were able to spread out and lay him down on the two seats between us.

Go for it.

We didn't travel quite as far as you, and nowhere near as far as the APs. We did fly to Oregon recently, and DD was 13mo. Islip to Vegas, which was about 5.5 hours, then up to OR, which was another 2 hours or so.

She was great (so was DS, but he's 4yo, so he needs more things to keep him occupied). She got through the flight better than the rest of us. She slept a lot. Just bring things to keep DC occupied (toys, food, books, etc). Definitely get DC their own seat. You don't want to have to have a baby on your lap for 14+ hours on an airplane!

I am probably taking DS to Sicily in November by myself when he will be about 6 months old.

My kid was an animal...Charlotte to San Fran at 7.5 months. I will have benedryl on me for next time we travel. I have never seen him act like that before.

Would I go to hawaii though? definitely. You have to live your life. Surprising enough, everyone on the plane was super nice to me and understanding.
