Living in a cape with kids?

How do you/will you have your BRs situated? We will be converting the MBR to a DR therefore our BR will be upstairs. There is one other BR upstairs (good size) and a smaller BR downstairs. DH wants to move DS to the BR downstairs when we have another baby (no, not yet....figure DS will be about 3 or so) but I'm afraid of him being alone. We would of course have a gate up and the video monitor but I would feel badChat Icon . DH is afraid of keeping the two in the same br upstairs b.c the baby will wake up DS and then we would have 2 kids awake during the night.

No, unfortunatley the room downstairs is way too small for our stuff. I WISH we could take away the smaller room for the DR and leave the larger room but the way it is situated it's not an optionChat Icon

Re: Living in a cape with kids?

My friends own a cape which they just dormered to add more bedrooms on top. They also didn't want one of their kids sleeping downstairs. Is this an option for you? Could the kids share a room in the beginning till they get a bit older?

Re: Living in a cape with kids?

I dont have a cape but I do have 2 kids sharing a room - we just put our 8 month old in with his 4 yr old brother a month or so ago. I was also concerned about the same thing but they've been getting use to sleeping in the same room with each other. Can you keep the baby with you for the first few months and then put them together? They will definitely get use to it. I just couldnt imagine putting a small child on the lower floor with everyone else upstairs. I grew up in a cape but my brother and I had the upstairs rooms. We never had a MDR though, my parents had the bigger room downstairs.

We have a cape too and our "plan" is to dormer the front to add another bedroom (or two) before our second child. (We don't even have one yet, so we've got plenty of time).

If we aren't able to do this, then I would probably try letting the kids share the smaller room upstairs.

We have a cape with a side extension on it. Our master bedroom is downstairs and upstairs are 2 bedrooms, one bigger than the other. We figured we will put the two kids in the bedroom upstairs and we will stay downstairs. With a baby monitor, fences, etc for safety we will be fine. Of course when we the child is a baby it will be sleeping in a bassinet in our room or right outside our door in what is now our den. We may dormer down the room but thats the plan for now.

I'm also in a 4 BR cape. We're all downstairs right now. My boys will share a room (they're 1.5 and 3.5) until we dormer (*hopefully* next year). Then we'll all move upstairs and the boys will each have their own room.

Re: Living in a cape with kids?

I see this as the only real downside of a cape Chat Icon

We're in a similar situation....we have 1 daughter and we're all downstairs right now, with an extra bedroom upstairs.

We're due with baby #2 in June and we don't want to move our daughter upstairs just yet - I don't want her on another floor alone at her age. So for the first year or so, they will be sharing a room downstairs with us. It's not a huge room but it'll be big enough for both of them for now.
