Link Between Preeclampsia & Excercise

Exercise during pregnancy linked to severe preeclampsia

As someone who delivered at 33w due to severe pre-e and HELLP, i thought this was a very interesting study.

I dont think those of you that exercise regularly should stop- but i thought it was def worth sharing because of a study of 85,000 pregnant woman, the results are pretty astounding.

J this cracked me up! Chat Icon I said to my mom "good thing I'm on bed rest- no risk of exercising too much!!!" Chat Icon Chat Icon
That's crazy though that for once too much exercise is harmful--- I figured it'd be the opposite. Thank you for sharing! Chat Icon

Link Between Preeclampsia & Excercise

This is the only study out there that says this. Every other article and study shows that exercise reduces the risk of pre-eclampsia... I wonder what other risk factors those women had.

I really hope this article is off in some way because it totally freaked me out. I'm a runner and my ob allowed me to run a half marathon last weekend (9wks) with lots of water, walk breaks, not going for a PR and I felt great. That was my last planned long run event (something I registered for back in the fall before TTC at all), but I still hoped to run consistently... with the dr's approval and so long as I'm in good health.

Now I'm feeling really paranoid Chat Icon

this might be the only study - but 85,000 participants over several years is a rather large study - whereas many of the studies saying the opposite merely suggest it based on lab findings or suggest it specifically targeting those with higher BMIs who are already at increased risk for pre-e (as opposed to the everyday fit woman that wants to keep exercising at a high level). in this study, as much as we would like to believe that there are "other reasons" its hard to believe that 7% of the "light" exercise group, 18% of the "moderate" group, and 29% of the "high" group all had risk factors that the rest of the participants in those sectors didn't have. is it possible, sure, is it likely, absolutely not.

again im not saying exercise is bad or i would stop doing whatever your doctor told you that you are cleared to do. and i wouldnt get all paranoid if you are very into working out - its just worth noting the study. fwiw i didnt work out at all during my pregnancy (after years of consistently going to the gym) due to complications with IVF. i still developed severe pre-e and HELLP although i DID have higher risk factors.

Very interesting. There are so many factors at play (variables) but that is a large study. Exercise does raise BP so I wonder if there is a correlation there, especially if you are pre-disposed to pre-e (fertility treatments, age, weight, etc).
The more info to look at and research, the better!
