Like the 1000000th tipping thread BUT...

I know its "illegal" to give the mail lady cash and they want you to give something of value up to $20 but is it less legal if you give something to your mail person with their first name on it with no reference to delivering mail? Would that make it ok?

(I know a lot of post office people probably look the other way when it comes to that kinda thing but I dont want to get anyone in trouble.)

If you want to give her more, couldn't you just do a few enevelopes? Like if you wanted to give 40 do one envelope with a card from you and hubby and another from your kids?

While many Postal Service™ customers have traditionally thanked their mail carrier with gifts of cash during the holiday season, this practice puts our employees at risk of violating federal law. The Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch ("Standards"), specifies that Postal Service employees may not accept gifts from outside sources (including Postal Service customers) or gifts given to them because of their official positions. Postal Service employees are also prohibited from soliciting gifts from outside sources.

There are a number of exceptions and exclusions to the general gifts rule . Postal Service employees may accept the following items:

Snacks and beverages that are not offered as part of a meal.
Items with little intrinsic value (i.e., greeting cards, plaques, pens, coffee mugs, etc.).
Perishable items (i.e., flowers, chocolates, cookies, etc.); if the items are clearly worth more than $20, employees should share them with others in the Postal Service workplace.
Items with a market (retail) value of $20 or less.
Gifts motivated solely because of a personal relationship.
Gifts for which the employee has paid market (retail) value.
Gifts paid for by the Postal Service.
Postal Service employees may not accept cash - in any amount or form (bills, checks, money orders) - from an outside source.

If you were concerned about giving cash, what about a gift card - like doesn't American Express or someone have ones that you can use almost anywhere? It says no cash, checks, money orders, etc, but I think gift card is a little different?

It is illegal for any civil servant to accept or be offered a tip or gift. It's to ensure that they are doing their job and not playing favorites because in some past cases it could be interpreted as a bribe.

That being said my dad's mail carrier put a blank envelope with a card practically soliciting a tipChat Icon

So what kind of "personal relationship" do I have to have with a postal worker to make it OK to give them a gift? Chat Icon Chat Icon
