LIJ and classes
Anyone who is or has delivered at LIJ... Did you take any child care classes or birth classes? If so, when? Also, when did you do your hospital tour?
Thanks!!
Edit: also - was it helpful? Would you recommend the class.

LIJ and classes
We took the baby care class and breast feeding class. I started taking the classes around 32 weeks. I did the tour before one of the classes. The hospital is beautiful! The baby care class I think I could have done without. The breastfeeding was informative.

Re: LIJ and classes
long story short, i would not recommend going...save your money. here is why...
DH and i did the preparation for childbirth class - the three weeknight session. the first session they went over breast feeding and lamaze. the breast feeding i guess was useful info but we had already decided we wanted to try to breastfeed so they didnt really tell us anything we didnt know (if you are on the fence about it, they will definitely try to encourage you and go over all the benefits). then was the lamaze which was a waste in my opinion...i couldnt stop laughing. the instructor even said at the end...just breath however you are comfortable when you are in labor...so why bother practicing the lamaze?!?!
the second session of that series we missed bc DH was sick
the third session they went over birth options (csection, natural unmedicated, natural with meds etc) and then more lamaze.
with that class, we got the free breast feeding class...which was ok. we stayed for the first half which was basically covering everything we learned in the preparation class but then they give out dolls and show you options on how to hold the baby to breast feed (which i will admit was useful bc i only thought there was one way to hold the baby and there are actually 3). we left during the break and another LIFer told me the second half of the class was a video that went over everything we learned the first half of the class. they kept stressing that if you want to breast feed, you can ask for a lactation consultant to come into your room after birth and they will help you. in my opinion, that is more valuable then sitting through a class bc you have your actual baby there and as much as you can learn about it, its not the same as having the baby in your arms trying to latch.
what i would suggest is going for a hospital tour...they do them all the time and you can sign up without taking any classes and they are free. the hospital is amazing so you really dont need the tour, but it put me at ease seeing the facility and knowing i am in good hands.
i would also suggest going for a car seat inspection before the baby is born. we went through the plainview hospital (new hyde park doesnt offer them in the winter) and they were very helpful...not only did they make sure it was tight enough, but they looked at the car and told us things we should or shouldnt have.

Wow. Thank you so much!! Once I get the car seat, I will look at the car seat inspection. Do you have a number for that?
