It's about $10K to move it to the garage. Very extensive work too!

You also need to make sure your garage is insulated. A light insulation around the pipes will NOT protect it from freezing. BTDT with my washer and dryer.

We thought about doing it but it was too much $$$. We also just converted to gas but again could not move it to the garage. We have to finish the garage first.

BUT I would love to!!!!

hmm... couldn't you "closet it in" in your garage? like make an insulated closet in there so that pipes wouldn't freeze, plus you wouldn't have to look at the ugly thing?

10K, huh? that's steep.

Re: levit ranch owners - boiler

The pipes would still be exposed in your garage. The pipes have to go inside your house in order to have heat and hot water. Just some foam wrapping around them won't be enough. TRUST ME!!!! 3 years ago we had a water pipe bursting wide open on us. The pipes were for the washer and that room was insulated but the rest of the pipe went through the garage. While we thought it was OK because it was insulated around it, we had a very bad freeze that Winter and the pipe bursted. We were told by several plumbers that we HAD to insulate the garage otherwise you are really taking a chance. Even the gas system we installed would have to be in an insulated garage.

We have a custom cover for it in the kitchen.
