Level II Test
Can someone explain what exactly happens at the Level II?
On here, the rest of the test seems to be overshadowed by the fact that people are finding out the sex... We are not, but I wanted to know what the test entails, etc.
Is it just a long sono? Is there a blood test too? Do you get results right away?

Re: Level II Test
It's a long sono where they take tons of measurments of the baby. I don't know how it usually works about finding out results, but based on my AFP results, we had set up a meeting with the Genetic Counselor immediately following my sono where she and the Dr. at the sono place went over my sono pictures.

Re: Level II Test
There was no blood test. They did a lot of measurements - of the head, the abdomen, the femur... they took pictures of organs - the kidneys, the bladder, the brain, the heart... I know there was others. She kept telling us what we were looking at but me and DH are like "um.. ok," it was hard to tell what was what.
ETA: about results - i didn't get it done at my regular dr. the sono tech said everything looked great and then she went to show the pics to a doctor. Since the doctor didn't come in to "discuss" anything with us, I figured everything was fine. I had it done on a Fri, and on Mon, my own doctor's office called to tell me everything was good.

Re: Level II Test
for me it was the anatomy scan where you see the 4 chamber of the heart, the stomach, brain, kidneys, etc...and everything gets measured. The baby's stomach looks like a round ball, but they measure it to make sure everything is at the stage that it should be. My sono probably lasted about 15-20 minutes (even though it felt like it went by so quickly!) and my cooperated with getting everything measured... Good Luck!

Re: Level II Test
my dr referred to it as an "anatomy scan". the ultrasound technician took measurements of everything, to make sure the was healthy and growing according to schedule. it's a long sonogram, about an hour, depending on how your little one cooperates. no blood was drawn. some of the things they looked for were the arms, legs, kidneys, heart, heart chambers, brain, spine, feet, hands, etc etc...it was so cool!

Re: Level II Test
Its definately long, especially if the baby doesn't cooperate like my little girl. Its amazing on what you see. Long with taking measurements and seeing the heart, kidneys, bladder, the brain, you also see the the arteries, the blood flow through the umbilical cord. The tech even did a scan of her lips, I guess to see if Baby G has a cleft palate.

The baby's stomach looks like a round ball, but they measure it to make sure everything is at the stage that it should be. Good Luck! ITA. They also look for visible markers of complications, and also measure amnio levels, check the position of the placenta, etc. It can take anywhere between 20 minutes to an hour, depending on how good the tech is and how well the baby cooperates. They also did a fetal doppler in addition to measuring the heart, and they did a doppler of the umbillical cord to measure the flow in & out. They measure the cranuim, get a profile, check the nuchal fold (again if you had an ultrascreen), and measure the major bone structures (femur, spine, etc).
The sono tech takes the results/images to the Radiologist and (s)he will write the report and send it to your OB. It is usually a day ar two depending on how efficient the Dr is.

Re: Level II Test
I had mine at LIJ. I think it was about 30-40 minutes long. They focus a lot on the heart and the spine as well as all the limbs and such to make sure all is growing normally.
The tech was great, and towards the end, the overseeing doctor came in to look at everything as well. He was able to say that according to the pics, all looks good. The baby kinda looks like a skeleton durng this test LOL.
There was no blood work.
