Lets talk- talk
Ryan is just about 14 months and still not saying very much-
Momma/ Mommy Dadda/Daddy Dog/Doggy Thank- you Hey
and thats where the list ends... other than the Momma/dadda stuff- its rare he even says the other things (but it is clear that- that is what he is saying)
SHould I be worried? Is/ did anyone else 14 month old still saying few words?

Re: Lets talk- talk
At this age he should be saying anywhere from 3-6 words as per my brother because I was worried about the same thing...
You need to start to worry if they are doing the same thing at 18 months at that point is when I would look in to intervention...
I am sure your ped would say the same thing..

Julia is almost 17 months and saying:
Mama Dada cat-meow (make the noise's too) Dog-woof duck-quack Bird-tweet-tweet hi bye Little girl (she started saying that from a book I read to her) More (when she wants food)
She says a lot of mumble jumble too like shes trying to say more, but thats pretty much all the stuff she is saying now very well.

Re: Lets talk- talk
Jeremy is 22 months and he just started to get some more words out. He says about 25-30 words but he comprehends everything we say. I had the same concerns and his ped said it's perfectly fine. As long as he has 10 words by 18 months no worries.

Re: Lets talk- talk
He totally understand everything- I can say "please put this in your room" and he will go do so...
"can you get mommy the phone" and he'll do so-
He's 100% got the understanding thing down pack...
HE says about 5 words... just not consistently

My son was the same way. Late talker but always listening to everything going on and would understand everything said to him. After he hit 2 he wouldn't stop talking. Since then he learns new words daily and I kind of miss the quiet days

Re: Lets talk- talk
Can't go by me - my kids were very verbal because their mother never shuts up.
By 15 months - no exaggeration Joseph had over 50 words clearly. My mother actually wrote them all down. Because I didn't know better I was not only not impressed but worried because he wasn't up to 2 syllable sentences.
Maddie - I'm still worried about. She seems to take a long time to come up with what she wants to say.
I think the number of words is a little on the low side but probably won't be too worried.
The best advice I can offer is - call early intervention if you're concerned. They'll come to your house (for free) & evaluate him. They'll give you peace of mind if nothing is wrong - and if there is you'll get the help you need early on.

Will they even evaluate someone so young?

Marissa -
Start repeating things in one word sentences. For example "Would you like JUICE? JUICE? You want JUICE? Yes, that's right - JUICE!" I read a book on teaching babies to read (yes, I know you all think I'm nuts). Part of the explanation they had is if you follow what advertisers do - Loud, excited...they'll pay more attention.

Early intervention won't come at 14 months, I would wait a couple of months before you do anything...

Yes - if they feel it's warranted, they definitely will - they'll also give you his IQ which is kind of cool.
My cousin's baby has a whole host of serious issues. He's had Early Intervention since birth.

Who determines if its warranted?
I have had this convo with my ped. and his view is he's fine- and he isnt even 14 months old yet- why am I freaking out?
But thats me- Freaking out over everything- all the time!

Re: Lets talk- talk
As someone who had their little one in Early Intervention for Speech do not worry yet. Ryan is still young not even 14 months. EI would not even be considered until he is 18 months. Sammy was evaluated at 18 months because he was not talking. He got services until he was 2. He is now 4 1/2 adn NEVER stops talking . He talks from the minute he wakes up until he goes to sleep at night. I have come to realize that all kids or I should say most talk in their own time.
Dont think twice about it until Ryan is at lest 18 months then let me know and I will steer you in the right direction. Once he starts talking he will not stop - trust me
I might add two things:
First. Do not give Ryan things the minute he wants it. Make him reqest it : For example say to him you want more? and show him what he wants evntually he will get words that way
second: sammy's speech therapist made us take away the bottle and binkie.

Re: Lets talk- talk
Marissa --- Emily and Ryan are just about at the same age. When we had our 1 year checkup the doctor asked about speech and basically she said at this age all that we should be concerned about is that he/she can discriminate between saying Mommy & Daddy and also the receptive language, which is being able to understand the things you say to him.
His expressive language will develop more after 18 months of age, so at this point I wouldn't worry too much, since the receptive seems to be fine.
Does he babble constantly, but not real words? Do you see progress in his babbling? Is it starting to sound more and more like real language, even if it's his own little language and not OUR language?
I would still give him more time, and do things like Barbara said. Emily is starting to be an imitator -- she loves to mimic the things we say, or at least try, so I am sure that he will start saying more soon. You are a great mom and I'm sure you're doing everything possible!
And just think, Ryan can probably RUN CIRCLES around Emily!
How about a Christmas-time playdate? Ryan can get Emily walking more, and she can get him to say silly things like Duck and cheese!

Re: Lets talk- talk
Perfectly normal. Trust me. Andrew didn't explode with his speech until he was about 20-22 months. We had him evaluated for speech therapy at 2 years old because our pedi recommended it. So I know a lot about what is normal. I have his whole written report. HE evaluated at a 3 year old level. FM me if you have any questions.

My cousin's baby has a whole host of serious issues. He's had Early Intervention since birth.
Usually children who are evaluated this young have serious medical issues (i.e. down syndrome, prematurity). The youngest I ever started seeing a child was 8 months old (born 4 months prematurely) and 18 months (still had an unrepaired cleft palate). I could tell you right now as a speech pathologist who works in early intervention, to qualify for services they take into account his comprehension and his expressive language to combine for a "total language" score. He would have to be very delayed in both areas at his age. Give him some time. Fm me if you want to know anything else

Re: Lets talk- talk
Alex doesn't talk much... she has a few words but uses them RARELY, even more so now that she uses sign language. She has an extraordinary vocabulary in sign - please, give, thank you, dog, Alex, Clara (her friend), teacher, food, milk, more, gentle, dada, mama, etc. She has become so freakin' proficient in sign language that there is no need for her to talk... now I'm undertanding why they say learning it delays speech

Re: Lets talk- talk
I really think all babies are different with these milestones. Like Ry walks by himself but Miranda is still cruising and Ry doesn't have a lot of words while Miranda has a ton. I think it's too soon to worry though but if you are you could ask your ped. what they think. Miranda had a few words and then all of a sudden started picking up on everything, it's really almost like it happened overnight. I'll bet it will happen in no time. We just practice with her a lot by telling her everything she looks at, touches, points to etc. We also repeat it several time. ie banana, that's a banana, banana. I think that has helped a lot. Also everytime she attempts to say it we will say the word again to her. I also won't say words her way. I make sure to always say the correct word so she eventually learns it that way.
