leasing related question...
For some reason I cannot find the title to the car I am leasing now - I need it to return the car - do I go to the DMV to get a copy? Is it possible to get a copy??

Re: leasing related question...
You don't get a title when you have a leased car. The lien holder has the title. Or at least that's how it works with our trucks.

Re: leasing related question...
You do not get the original copy since it is a lease. You have to contact your leasing company for a copy.

as a leasee, or whatever the call us people that lease, you should not have possession of a title as you do not own the car.

Re: leasing related question...
I had the actual lease title with Honda as well. It was called their Smart Lease Program and you were given the official title. They no longer do it. I hope you get the new one in time.

Re: leasing related question...
I have a true lease
not a ballon payment - smart buy
and I do not have the title
the bank is the owner of the car not me

Re: leasing related question...
well I called the dealership and its ok if I hand them the title when I turn in the car. At least I won't have a problem with that.

Re: leasing related question...
The leasing laws have been flipped back and forth so many times in the past 5 years, so you may or may not have a copy of the title.
Due to the vicarious liability law, several years ago, NY state opted out of leasing where the banks hold the title... That's where the Smart Buy came in - essentially a lease, but where the lessee holds the title, and thereby limiting the bank (i.e., lien holder) from any huge payouts in case of the lessee's accident and damages.
I'm not sure of the currents laws, but I do believe now that some banks are holding the titles again. I leased my truck in early 2006 and do not have the title in my possession. GMAC does.
