Learning to walk shoes...
I had been sending Thomas to daycare in Pedipeds shoes and socks, but they told me that since he's trying really hard to walk, they've been taking his shoes and socks off so he can grip better with his bare feet. They said he was slipping and losing his balance because of the smooth bottom of the pediped shoe.
I know bare feet are best for learning to walk, and now that it's summer, I can just bring Thomas to daycare barefoot, but what kind of shoe do you put on them once they learn to walk? I thought soft soled shoes were best, that's why I bought the Pediped shoes, but are there soft soled shoes that also have a rubber "gripper" bottom?

Great question, I have been wondering myself. I can't even get shoes on DD's feet yet, she's 11 months and no shoes seem to fit her, but she'll be walking any time now!

I had DS in socks when he was in Daycare.
At home he is barefoot.
I will need shoes though for outside. I can't let him "walk"/stand outside barefoot.

I think soft-soled are best for when they're NOT walking or trying to walk. Go with the bare feet for now - and once he starts walking, I believe you'll need a hard-soled shoe/sneaker to support him.

Bare feet are best - but for outside stride rite sells walking shoes and cruising shoes - which have rubber soles to protect their feet when outside and keep them from slipping.

I always had DS is socks with grippers. When he really started cruising, I started sending him to daycare in stride rite stage 2 because they bend very easily with his foot. And they're the only ones I could find in half sizes and he's been a 3.5 for forever!

same here....they have hard soles and protect the ankle too (they are kind of "high-tops")

Where is this Wantagh Bootery everyone talks about??? Besides being in Wantagh, of course!  I'm in Massapequa, so it would be very close. Are they cheaper than buying from Stride Rite?

its right on wantagh ave by king kullen and st frances church. coming from mass it will be on your left coming from sunrise hwy.
I think they are the same price as in the stride rite store in broadway mall. they arent cheap around 50 bucks but well worth it- my DD grew out of them before they wore out and she had them for 6 months.

I got DS's shoes from striderite. Wantagh Bootery is on Wantagh Avenue by the High School and Middle School. I prefer Stride Rite. Especially the store inside Lobel's. They're always so helpful and they made sure DS had the right fit. They are not out to just sell shoes.
I had a bad experience at Wantagh Bootery and I won't go back there. They tried to sell me sneakers that weren't my sons size only b/c they didn't have anything in his size in XW. They said it wasn't a big deal and seemed annoyed when I said no thanks. I had gotten him fitted at Stride Rite at Lobel's earlier in the day but they didn't have his size available. It was going to be a couple of days for the shipment of new shoes so I thought I would go to Wantagh Bootery to see what they had. I knew his size from going to Stride Rite but they still tried to sell me something else.

for someone who may not know wantagh that well they may look for the high school or middle school which is way down beltagh ave. not a good landmark.
I have been there 2 times and always had great experiences, oh make sure you sign in by the cashier! good luck
