Leap Pad or Leap Reader

Trying to figure which to put on DS Christmas list - he will 4 in a few months.

He knows all his letters, letter sounds and about 20 sight words. I thought the Leap Reader would be good to help continue with the reading process. Not sure what exactly the Leap Pad does - is it just games or learning games? Which would be better - or are they two different things and get both?

TIA

The Leap Reader is like a pen that you put over certain books (that you load onto the pen) and it reads for you.

The Leap Pad is a tablet. There are learning games and you can also download shows.

My kids have Leap Pads and like them but, in hindsight - I would have rather spent the money getting them Kindles - since the apps for the Leap Pad are pricey.

You can buy cartridges. We have the LeapPad 2. Kids love it!

Most of the games are cartridges. You can also download episodes of popular shows.

The games are about $25/each though.

My kids like them but, I think the Kindle would have worked out better for us.
