Lazy Husbands

Does anyone else have a lazy husband? We closed on our house end of August, did a few things before we moved in in October, but the last thing we needed to do was paint the kitchen. I have been bugging DH for months to finish the kitchen. I'm sick of looking at the sheetrock! I would have done it myself, but I did or initiated almost every other project myself that had to be completed in the house. I had enough of doing everything myself. DH took off this week with me and said we were going to get it done. Well for the past 2 days he hasn't felt good, so of course nothing has been done, except him playing video games and he doesn't want to hear me complain or ask about it anymore and I'm trying not do anything because then I'll just get stuck doing the whole thing myself, or most of it anyway! Ahh...ok vent over!Chat Icon

I'd just do it, that would probably make my DH get off his butt & take over.. if not, I'm sure you can hold it over his head later Chat Icon

Re: Lazy Husbands

yeah i know i've been thinking about just doing it because bugging him and being a PITA about it isn't working. I definitely won't let him forget it if that's what happens!

Re: Lazy Husbands

I love my DH but he does not have 1oz of handyness in him. I would paint myself.

I did our outdoor paved patio last year. I just asked him to dig the hole so I could put a rock base and sand. And he managed to mess it up both the hole size and compacting the rocks and sand (I ended finishing it!!!)

I painted some walls in DS' playroom.

I only ask to assist me when I need him.

Otherwise, we hire someone.

Re: Lazy Husbands

he painted 2 rooms in the house only because there was a time limit before we moved in. now that we are in and have all the time in the world, he takes his SWEET time! i'm just getting annoyed and frustrated because he has no problem leaving things until I do it and i'm tired of it! i guess the kitchen will have to be another one of those things

Well, just drop the ball on the laundry. Do only yours and explain that you were not feeling well enough to do his after you spent so much energy painting the kitchen.

I have nothing against relaxing. I will be the first one to leave dishes in the sink to spend a few hours with DH and DS at the playground.

But when things need to be done, they need to be done.

Re: Lazy Husbands

Here is my 2 cents. My hubby is VERY handy but VERY lazy. If you do everything now, you are laying the groundwork for the rest of your marriage. I have been married and in our home for 12 years. I was in your shoes and opted to say screw you, and I did it all myself.
I have spackled, painted, done molding and repairs, you name it! Well, guess what? 12 years later 99% of the responsiblity of this house and even our kids falls on me. I say that you need to confront him now and put it out on the table what your expectations are of eachother. It has not been good for our relationship, I have loads of resentment and wished I would have put my foot down 12yrs ago.

thanks for your advice. this is one of the things my mother told me also and it's something that her MIL told her. it's also part of the reason i've held out this long without doing what needs to be done. i'm trying to wait until he does it. he says it will be done by the end of the week, but we have a few other things planned that will interfere with painting. i really want to hold out a little longer and see if he does what he says otherwise i'm going to lose my cool. how many times can you ask someone to do something and they just keep giving you excuses.

Tell him if it is not done by Friday, you are hiring someone to do it. Make him pay for it too.

Same for me....and he has NO interest in learning at all. Now that my Dad is gone, we will be hiring more handymen than ever!Chat Icon

Re: Lazy Husbands

I have a self proclaimed lazy husband.

His most recent job was to take down the Christmas tree. It was up until yesterday (Feb. 20th).

Sometimes I just get fed up and do it myself. I dont even want to know how much Ill have to nag him once we have a house!

Re: Lazy Husbands

Usually when I want something done and DH isn't getting around to it quick enough, I start it myself. When he sees me doing it, the fire is finally lit under his a$$ and he gets up and does it. For instance, today when he finally woke up at 2:30pm and asked if it snowed Chat Icon My answer was "Yes, I'm going to shovel now...." Never saw him get out of bed quicker Chat Icon

Re: Lazy Husbands

I think the lazy aspect comes when they think it's so hard or takes so much time so they procrastinate.

Smaller issue, but when dinner is over and DH says he will clean up. That means everything goes into the sink. He says he'll finish the next day but that turns into a week sometimes and I will eventually end up doing it.

Yeah, I've left it a week..even if he is working from home everyday it will sit.
