Laparascopy
Hello Ladies,
I spoke with my dr. yesterday and he told me he may want me to have a laparascopy which is where they would assess the reproductive system. I would be put under general anesthesia and would be in the hospital just as an outpatient.
Have any of you had this done? Just want to know what to expect afterwards.
TIA!

Re: Laparascopy
I had one done to remove Stage IV Endo (severe). I was really nervous considering I have never been put under. It actually wasn't that bad. Even the recovery. I had 4 incisions in my belly and 3 doctors working on me my Endo was so bad. I was up and about that night and walking around in the store the next day. A little sore, but that's it. Good luck!

Re: Laparascopy
I had a lap done in November for a chocolate cyst. I went to Good Sam and went in at 9 a.m. and was home by 4 p.m.
I was pretty sore for a couple of days, but my surgery was two days before Thanksgiving and I still cooked and hosted dinner for my small family.
They have to inflate the abdomen to see everything and the trapped gas was pretty bad - not all the time, just on and off. I carried a pillow around pressed against my tummy for the first couple of days.
I was also told to take off two weeks and only stayed out over the Thanksgiving holiday. That was a huge mistake! I was back home on the flat of by back exhaused again two days later, so listen to your Dr.'s advice.

Re: Laparascopy
I had one with a hysteroscopy about 3 years ago with Dr. Cain from RSofNY. My recovery was 3 days. They didn't find anything on the outside, but I guess it was precautionary. The worst part is the gas pains in your shoulders. A result of them putting air into your body to get to the repro organs. But, there's a trick to this. During your recovery make sure you put your feet up on a pillow. This will alleviate the pressure from this gas. I didn't have any pain when I did this. Someone passed this tip onto me and now I pass it on to you. After a week I was pretty much all better. And I all my scars healed up like they were never there too.
You have the easy part. You go to sleep, wake up and its all over. Getting up is hard at first, but you will be fine.
But, always good to get a 2nd opinion. What is the reason for doing this?

thank you so much everyone for the advice...I am glad to hear other have had it done and it helps to know what to expect. To answer your questions, it is for infertility testing, all of my test are coming back normal so far, however, my post coital test showed no sperm where it should be, so dr. thinks maybe my cervix is preventing it from getting through. He did warn me that I would not like him once I wake up ..that is why I had to ask.

I know its for IF, just wanted to know what they saw to make them think a lap was needed. I'm surprised then that you are not having a hysteroscopy. Unless he thinks possible endo. My HSG came up with abnormal uterine shape, so they did mine to check and make sure it wasn't due to endo. Which it wasn't and truthfully I didn't need a lap and I had wished they just did the hysteroscopy. And then if they saw something that way then proceed to lap. But, like I say I healed really well from it, so no damage done.

Re: Laparascopy
I had one with a hysteroscopy, D and C and tubal lavage in the beginning of my IF journey. I would inquire about the other procedures as well so in the event you DO need them, you don't have to go under anesthesia more than once. They were all exploratory in nature, but manageable after in terms of recovery.

well now I am not so sure, I did have an HSG back in March and all came back normal but they said I had a bicornate uterus and he does want to check the shapeof my uterus...maybe that is part of why he wants to do one.

Re: Laparascopy
My Dr performed at HSG and discovered my lft fallpn tube was blocked. He suggested a lap srgy. He performed a lap and turns out my tube wasn't blocked, he performed a D&C, recovery wasn't bad, took a week off from work. Currently 7 mnths pregnant w/ twins- IUI w/ injectable medicine. Good luck!

Ah so you did have a uterine abnormality like me...so they are looking to the outside to make sure nothing going on there. OK. I still might get a 2nd opinion if I were you. I didn't do that. But, I should have. It is still surgery. Wish you the best of luck.

thanks so much for the tip. My dr. even said he would rather have me just start IUI if all else seems normal instead of having to do that test...I am hoping I don't have to have it. Best of luck to you too!

Re: Laparascopy
I had a laparoscopy/heteroscopy due to unexplained IF and a slightly bicornuate uterus. I had done many IUI's which were not successful and wanted to just make sure there were no unseen problems before moving on to IVF. It turned out that everything was fine. The surgery and recovery were pretty easy. I was back to normal in a few days.

Re: Laparascopy
I had one 2 days ago! It does hurt, but I think it's because we use our stomach muscles for more than we think. I had 3 small incision--1 in my belly button, 1 on each side of my lower belly.
you'll be fine. just take it easy.
