Landscaper and harrassment [long]
We switched landscapers last year. "John" does our neighbor's house across the street and someone else a few doors down...seemed nice enough at first, and he talked us into using him last year. He was a little rough around the edges, but as long as he did a good job, we didn't care.
Last year... He did a big mulching for us early in the season, we kept asking for a bill. He would have every excuse in the book as to why he didn''t have one ready for us yet. Meanwhile, he's doing the weekly maintenance, not coming on Thursdays like he said...sometimes Fri, Sat or Sunday...even when we had people over and outside. Still no biggie. But he would also follow us up the driveway whenever we arrived home if he saw us while he was there working and rope us into a uncomfortably long conversations. He would bash neighbors, go on and on with racist comments about why he can't get good help. He did this a few times. We knew quickly that he was a nuts. Everytime we'd see him, we'd ask for a bill. He never gave us one. Our friends used him last year as well, and they also never got a bill.
We knew we were done with him. I liked our old company. They would come, do their job, leave, and send us a bill...normal! Last night DH calls to break up with "John". First, DH asked for a bill from last season, so we can square up, then tells him we won't be using him this year. John gets all nasty and sarcastic telling us how wonderful that news is! He asked why. DH tells him that we needed someone more consistent and left it at that. DH tried to keep the conversation positive and short. "Ok John, so if you could just send us a bill or drop one in our mailbox, we'd appreciate it." Lines like that. John then tells us how he's not hurting for money, so he's in no rush and he's been trying to get someone to do his billing. Then he gets nasty again telling us we should still use him. Conversation ends with Dh again asking for a bill and that he had to go.
Today, I get home and my neighbor (who doesn't use John) comes to me and tells me that my landscaper is a nut job. John was apparently driving by and stopped to talk to my neighbor and totally bashed us!!! Told him that we haven't paid him. Told him that our other neighbors haven't paid him!! He called my Italian neighbors a slur, our Asian neighbors another slur. My neighbor pretty much told him off and chased him away.
W-T-F! What can I do? I am afraid of this guy. He's got a screw loose and I want no part of it. Anywhere I can report him? I also want my bill so he has nothing hanging over us!

Good idea...give us a bill within (whatever time frame) or else I'll consider it a free service. I just hate the fact that he's bothering my neighbors and talking crap about us.

Can you file a complaint with the BBB so you have something on record?

I would send him a check for what you deem is fair for the work that was done.
Keep copies and send it certified.

I agree. I would also speak to your neighbors and just keep an eye out for this lunatic if he continues to harrass you and your neighbors I would call the police. You shouldn't have to feel unsafe in your own house.

Thansk for the great ideas! I thought about the certified letter with payment and the better business bureau route. I'm definitely not ruling them out. I'm going to wait and see first. I'm obviously not the only customer he's doing this to, so hopefully he'll crash and burn on his own. One more "situation" and all bets are off. I'll contact everyone and anyone.
