Ladies- Need Advice

a friend of mine keeps putting it in my head that I should go for a 2nd opinion.
Almost as if Dr B isnt doing his job right.

I will probably be moving onto IVF with him if this month IUI doesnt work.
Since we have to pay OOP she thinks I should talk to another Dr before paying so much $$.

I have endo and hypothyroidism. Besides that, eggs are great, DH sperm is great, lining is great, I make good # of eggs, etc.

I dont know what another Dr is going to do or say to me that I dont already know.

What do you girls think? I am so confused.
Sorry so long.

I don't see how a second opinion could hurt, especially when taking a big step like IVF. Good luck! Chat Icon

Re: Ladies- Need Advice

I agree, 2nd opinions are always a good idea. I know that everyone loves Dr B, but he certainly isn't the end all, be all...KWIM. I think if you feel you need it, then definitely get a 2nd opinion.

It is SO important to get sometimes a second or third opinion!

Who cares what anyone thinks you have to look out for you, and you never know what a second pair of eyes can pick up on.

Plus it will give you peace of mind.

I would get a second opinion. My doctor told me that when she was getting IVF she would just keep changing doctors until she found someone who worked for her.

Re: Ladies- Need Advice

Have you seen a reular endocrinologist for the hypothyroidism. I had to go last year as my thyroid was swollen and had produced extra liquid which he had to drain. My levels came back slightly high, but not high enough to be diagnosed. I have to go every year to check my levels and if they ever get high then we would discuss some type of treatment. Not sure if this helps or not. Good luck.

yes, I have a regular endo who I go to every 6 weeks. Both him & Dr B are still trying to get my TSH levels to be normal.

Oh Ok. Do you have doubts in Dr. B's treatments? I know the financial aspect weighs a lot into a decision as well, but you have to go with you feel comfortable with. Good luck on whatever you decide.

Re: Ladies- Need Advice

I always think that a fresh pair of eyes is a good thing when things are not working. However, in yoor case, since you've only tried IUI's and not IVF yet...I'm not so sure I would jump ship just yet. While IUI's work for many...they don't work for most unless you do them over a very long period of time. If you think Dr.B's timing is off with respect to the IUI's...either the timing of the trigger or IUI..then...yes...I would get a second opinion. Otherwise...IUI's are just not as complicated as an IVF where it is IMHO worth it to look around at your options. Also, from what I have read here, Dr. B sounds like he does almost all of the clotting/immune testing that frankly, most others do not bother to do, so I'm not sure what you will be getting by moving now.

I guess what I am trying to say...and I am not a Dr. B patient, is that I honestly do not think it much matters whom you see when it comes to IUI...particularly when you already have a doctor that has done testing for the issues mentioned above unless they are just really off in their IUI timing. I would only switch now if I were you if I had concerns about the lab Dr. B uses as THAT, along with protocol is what is really important when it comes to IVF and a reason to make a switch.

Along those lines, since you are going into IVF, be very careful that you are comparing apples to apples. Just because a 28 year old or someone with tubal or MFI issues has had success with a Dr. does not mean that you will if you have more complicated issues such as high FSH, DOR or of an advanced age. Tubal and MFI are among the easiest issues to fix via IVF. I myself switched clinics right before pursuing IVF because I knew that the clinic where I was at did not handle well cases like mine and that their lab was not top notch.

GL....I hope that was not too confusing.

No, I do not have any doubts, I guess people are putting doubts in my mind b/c of the fact that I have had 4 IUI and I am not preg yet.

I can definitely relate. I had 6 and now waiting to start IVF, so I have had my share of "get a 2nd opnion, where did you find this doc, my friend has a great doc, etc....". As if this whole process was not hard enough, sometimes the unsolicated advice just makes it worse. Chat Icon

Honestly...when it comes to IUI...it's pretty much the same everywhere you go. The only difference is..at least with Dr.'s like Dr. B, is that because they do clotting/immune testing, you are likely ahead of the game when it comes to IUI. Now...if you do IVF with Dr. B and keep getting the same results...it might be time to look around. If you guys feel comfortable with him and are happy...do what you feel in your heart. GL to you both.

Thanks for the best wishes. Although I am not with Dr. B, I have heard great things. I agree he does more extensive testing which a lot of doctors don't do. FOr instance my RE does not do clotting/immune issues until there has been an issue in the past.

Re: Ladies- Need Advice

You mentioned you have Endo. Have you ever had a Laparascopy??

Before you start the whole IVF process; it certainly can't hurt to get a consult with one or two doctors espcially if they come so highly recommended. But its totally up to you and how you feel.

You can still do IVF with Dr. B.........after you make your decision after your consult with others.

In my experience........I saw Dr. B. While I did like him........I did give someone else a chance and went on to another consult.

But thats just me......everyones different.

Re: Ladies- Need Advice

i would def go for another opinion. I had the same experience when i was with another RE. I felt that something was off, but kept blaming myself for having doubts. I actually went to dr B for 2nd opinion and very happy now. Please do what you feel is right. Especially, if you are paying out of pocket, i would def go for 2nd, 3rd opinions. Also, Tortoriello at SIRM might be cheaper, but doing very similar things as dr B ( ask classc or maybemommy). Good luck!

I did about 8 IUIs with various meds and none of them worked. MY first IVF did, so obviously whatever was preventing me from getting pregnant was not fixable with IUI. I would guess it was a fertilization issue because we did half ICSI and half not. ALL of the ICSI eggs fertilized and only one of the others.

I also paid out of pocket for IVF and I did not get a 2nd opinion. I had confidence in my doctor even though the IUIs didn't work. If you are comfortable with your doctor, there is no need to get another opinion just because other people are telling you to.
