Lactation Consultants

My OB gave us a recommendation for a lactation consultant who is an MD to help with breastfeeding. Does anyone know if this is covered by insurance? If not, how much does it cost to see one?

My ped. gave me the name of someone and told me that she does take my insurance (Empire)...I haven't needed to call her yet though so I am not sure if its true...my friend paid $135 for a lc to come in for a session though, so I would try the insurance first!

Call your insurance and ask. But sometimes it will depend on if there is something "wrong" with the mother or baby for the insurance to cover it. My son was tongue tied and wouldn't latch on, I also had inverted nipples, so the insurance ended up covering it. Even though, when I originally called, they said they wouldn't. I also figured if going to the LC for $125 would make a difference, and kept BF, then it more then out weighed the cost of formula over the next few months.

One of members of the staff at my perdiatrician's office (I think she is a nurse practitioner) is a lactaction consultant so we have been encouraged to ask her for anything we need.

ETA: you may want to ask your pediatrician if they have a consultant on staff.

My insurance company didn't pay for my LC or pump rental.
