Komen fund pulls funding from Planned Parenthood
No posts about this? I'm surprised.
I think if Susan Komen was alive, she would be upset by this. I bet she just cares about women getting screened, not the politics behind it.

I was surprised too. Glad that Bloomberg pledged to match up to $250k in new donations

Re: Komen fund pulls funding from Planned Parenthood
I've always had mixed feeling about the Komen organization and this just cements it for me. They are more concerned with politics then women's health. Disgusting.
ETA: LOVE that Bloomberg is pledging to match donations up to 250,000.

Re: Komen fund pulls funding from Planned Parenthood
It really bothers me a lot. I think Komen has become to big for itself. When they started to sue for using their color pink on breast cancer awareness products that is when I feel they started to loose their way. SGK has become a corporation instead of trying to fund a cure/prevention. The fact that they have pulled their funding to the most vulnerable of the population really bothers me. I am thrilled that Bloomberg is going to match 250,000. I am also happy that in a single day PP raised over 600,000. I used to support SGK, ran in their races, and volunteered my time but no more. I will put my energy to other worthy causes.

I have no respect for this foundation. They have become a big bully
The mediocre BS they focus is pathetic -like the use of the words "for the cure" in any other foundations slogan
Get over yourselves and come back to the real reason this foundation was founded for.

Re: Komen fund pulls funding from Planned Parenthood
From what I heard/read, SGK wanted PP to put mammography equipment in more locations. Currently, they do breast cancer screenings in about 25% of their locations. PP refused too, I think for funding and staff reasons. And now SGK pulled their support. In some ways I agree, because it's hard for lower income people to drive 3 hours to get a screening (although lots of private clinics are doing it for very low cost now, especially during October). On the other hand, PP would be out a lot too if they added more locations.
Either way, I haven't supported SGK in years. I think they've become too big for their britches, and now there will never be a "cure" because that would mean less $$ for them. They have legal staff to go after smaller charities that use "for the cure" in their slogan. As if other diseases are not looking "for the cure" too.

Re: Komen fund pulls funding from Planned Parenthood
as someone who has friends & family members with breast cancer & who has worked for a breast cancer non-profit, i'm not surprised. Komen is the same organization who has:
- sued other non-profit organizations/events that use the phrase "for the cure"
- partnered with KFC for a fundraising program.
in these economic times when so many are without healthcare, to cut funding that provides services (mammograms, gyn exams, cancer screenings) to women of all ages is just disturbing.

Re: Komen fund pulls funding from Planned Parenthood
I'm not a huge fan of their foundation due to petty bullcrap like not allowing other organizations to use "for the cure" in their campaigns. That, to me, is nonsense and not looking at the greater issue: that there ARE other organizations out there looking for a cure.
Likewise, I'm not a huge fan of Bloomberg, but I am very happy to see that he matched their usual contribution.

On the other hand, PP would be out a lot too if they added more locations.
Except that PP pays for the mammograms they refer out. Mammograms require a trained radiologist and an xray tech. To buy a machine, hire a radiologist, hire a tech to give them? Well, it would far exceed the grant that SGK gives to PP (680,000) for each location. The 680k grant goes to giving exams, teaching how to do an exam and referring those with problems for mammos (and paying for them too)
SGK is trying to spin this but they're making it worse. 3 of the 19 locations that received SGK funds do provide mammograms, so why defund all 19 if this were truly the case?
Why come out for 2 days claiming it's about a federal investigation then change the story when under fire? If it was solely about mammograms, then why would a top SGK execs resign? Why would affiliates denounce the decision?
Me thinks there's a lot of BS coming out of the SGK headquarters. Sure, this new explanation SOUNDS good but it's not true.
From a MoveOn newsletter: "Komen says this isn't about choice, but it recently changed its funding guidelines to exclude any organization under investigation by Congress, knowing that a baseless investigation into Planned Parenthood had been opened by Republican Representative Cliff Stearns at the request of anti-choice groups. And Komen has strong links to the anti-choice movement. Its new vice president of public policy, Karen Handel, ran for governor of Georgia in 2010 on an aggressively anti-choice platform, part of which was a pledge to defund Planned Parenthood."
SGK disturbed me in their actions before this, now they disgust me.

Amen. I really can't stand Komen. They waste money compyrighting that instead of putting that $ toward finding a cure. Why would you need to copyright that? Aren't you just happy people are trying to help find the cure?
This is so political and disgusting.
FTR I don't believe in abortion. I believe it's morally wrong, but I disagree with the way it's being played out in politics. Although I don't like abortion, I can see beyond that to all of the GOOD that PP does for people. It provides needed healt services for people who can't otherwise afford it. We NEED Planned parenthood

Re: Komen fund pulls funding from Planned Parenthood
And just like that they are now even recanting the mammogram theory Komen apologizes
Komen for the Cure just released the following statement from Nancy Brinker and the Susan G. Komen Board of Directors:
We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives. The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not. Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair. Our only goal for our granting process is to support women and families in the fight against breast cancer. Amending our criteria will ensure that politics has no place in our grant process. We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities. It is our hope and we believe it is time for everyone involved to pause, slow down and reflect on how grants can most effectively and directly be administered without controversies that hurt the cause of women. We urge everyone who has participated in this conversation across the country over the last few days to help us move past this issue. We do not want our mission marred or affected by politics - anyone's politics. Starting this afternoon, we will have calls with our network and key supporters to refocus our attention on our mission and get back to doing our work. We ask for the public's understanding and patience as we gather our Komen affiliates from around the country to determine how to move forward in the best interests of the women and people we serve. We extend our deepest thanks for the outpouring of support we have received from so many in the past few days and we sincerely hope that these changes will be welcomed by those who have expressed their concern.
Just this morning, Brinker said:
Komen founder Nancy Brinker said the organization wants to support groups that directly provide breast health services, such as mammograms. She noted that Planned Parenthood was providing only mammogram referrals.

Me neither.
I just am amused by it all at this point. SGK has created a PR nightmare for itself and PP exceeded the grant in donations
I don't know anyone that is going to contribute to SGK in the future. Too many of their shortcomings (like suing others for using "for the cure" or pink) have become general knowledge.l

Let's be clear though that it's for current grants and not new ones. This whole thing has me ticked off.
