I dont knit but you can try a yarn store or even Michaels/AC Moore for classes

I've seen classes at the library too. Once you've got the basics down most good knitting stores will help you with a specific project if you buy the yarns from them too.

For advanced knitting there are wonderful seminars sponsored by Knitter's Magazine with classes on a lot of topics, but unless it's changed it's not for beginners - you want to know the basics of knit, purl and other basic stitches and pattern reading.
