Kitchen Cabinets: Which costs more
So we are about to start renovating our main living area - kitchen, living room and dining room.
One contractor that I spoke to awhile ago had said our current cabinets are made with such solid materials that he would advise that we have them sanded and restained instead of tossing them and getting new ones.
We never really talked pricing though cause he was working on a different project for us at the time. SO out of curiosity - which do you think would cost more? Brand new custom cabinets? or Refinishing what we already have.
p.s. neither is a DIY option - we're not that handy. So I'm talking about having a pro come in either way.

I would think having new cabinets done would be more expensive. There is the cost of the materials for the cabinet, the cost for the custom design, the cost for having the cabinets built to spec, the cost of having the existing cabinets pulled out, the cost of having the new cabinets put in. With refinishing you would have the cost of labor to refinish.. and then possibly new hardware.

All good points! If I remember correctly I he had admitted that it would be less expensive to refinish. He actually said it would cost a small fortune to build cabinets that are as solid as what i currently have. But we never got into specifics or pricing.
Just for a point of reference - the cabinets are original to the house - solid oak. The doors are all one piece and are carved at the top and bottom.

Re: Kitchen Cabinets: Which costs more
I remember watching one of those home improvement shows and the labor involved with sanding & repainting that cabinets almost cancelled out the cost of buying new ones. The new cabinets were more but not by a lot.
I'd get an estimate for both to see how it works out.

It depends who does the work and what type of replacement cabinets you get. You also have to keep in mind: do you like the style of the cabinets you have now? Do you like the set up of your kitchen or would you move appliances or get different cabinets (different size, drawers instead of doors, etc)?

Re: Kitchen Cabinets: Which costs more
honestly- as someone who works for a cabinet maker- I will tell you the cost for doing the sanding, restaining (done by a professional) won't be dramatically less than getting new cabinets put in..
it is a lot of labor and effort to sand/stain cabinets... and honestly depending upon how old your cabinets are, the wood might not be able to take a dramatically darker stain etc...
solid oak is a pretty dated look, so I would probably get new cabinets made in solid maple or cherry....
my dad (vendor on here- dynamic kitchens) charges per running foot: $282/running foot for maple cabinets and $325/running foot for cherry cabinets..
that price is for custom made cabinets- we make them in our factory in copiague- you get what you want and it doesnt' matter what configuration you have.. up to you. No fillers- no wasted space.

Thanks for the advice! Actually the cabinets have a very dark stain on them right now so we'd be looking to to with a much lighter color.
I'm happy with the current layout of the kitchen - definitely don't think I would change things around and the carving on the doors is very pretty and is something that I get the feeling that I would pay a lot to have done on new cabinets.
First contractor is coming this Friday to take a look so I guess I'll see what he says.
Thanks everyone for the advice!

If you go lighter on oak you are going to see a very heavy grain... of course depending upon what type of oak it is (white or red) and how it is cut (quarter sawn, rotary cut, etc) you'll see more or less of the grain- but oak has a lot of figure (or grain- figure is the technical term)..
depending on how light you want to go, be careful b/c Oak ages with UV light and gets deeper.. on red oak, more orangy/yellow.
