Kinda off-topic, what would you do ?
Ok, this just isn't my week - most of you know the situation I posted with my dad and the prostate cancer, well, getting that news on Sunday night 8:30pm, I called in sick Monday, I couldn't sleep and was hysterical - my boss calls me to see if I will be in Tuesday, I said yes, he then asked if I could come in early (I am normally due in at 10) so I said I will do 9:00, he said ok, thanks - he said he had an app't and wouldn't be in - so needed me there - however his brother is his partner - I assumed he wouldn't be in either or else I would not of been asked to come in early, so I thought I was doing them a favor. I get to work and everyone is there as NORMAL, there was NO reason for me to be there. Now I am ****** b/c I could done stuff in the AM, here is my dilema (sorry so long) I am on salary, so I do NOT get paid that hour. Should I ask if I could leave 1 hr. early another day this week to make up that hour (if they couldn't be in the office and needed me to open b/c they were in a bind, I wouldn't even hestitate to **** up the hour) however they were all her working!!!)
But since they did this and pi$$ed me off I want to get that hour back, the ONLY reason I hesitate to push their buttons is that we are talking about a maternity pkg. soon. But this made me sooo angry - pls. help.

In all honesty....I would not ask for another hour off to make up for it. Maybe because i work in an industry where we often stay late/come early to help out but don't get paid or anything else for it. I know you feel upset about spending an hour there you didn't need to....but its only one hour, thats how i look at it-don't let them take advantage again though!!

Re: Kinda off-topic, what would you do ?
i personally wouldn't quibble over an hour. if this becomes habit on their part then i would say something, but in general salaried employees don't question an hour here and there...
if you need time, just tell them. i would simply say on XXXX day i need to leave a little early. if they give you a hard time, then reference the fact that you didn't think twice about coming in early in XXXX day, so you just figured it wouldn't be a big deal.
it's all in how you approach them. if you don't make a big deal of it, hopefully they won't as well...

Like the others, I would not get in a "thang" about one hour. Just doesn't seem worth it to me.

I would just let the hour go - especially if they are considering a maternity package for you.

Re: Kinda off-topic, what would you do ?
I totally understand what you are saying, they just make me so mad, it was like the did it on spite b/c I called in sick the day before and lied why they needed me.
I guess I was so defensive b/c I get no lunch hour and I am here 42 hours a week, watch THEIR kids when they are here @ the office. Just feel taken advantage of, this just added to the list.
when boss does payroll @ 5:00 on fridays - I have to wait until all employees come pick them up - he doesn't stay I have too!
ETA: I just want to ask "why was I asked in early?" I know that isn't right, but I want them to know I am AWARE that there is no reason for it.
thanks for letting me vent.

I don't know, I've asked for one - and they reduced my hours instead - they went from 7:30 - 5:30 to 8-5 instead, they just have something against me leaving - they want the shop and phones OPEN - they work out in the field.

Re: Kinda off-topic, what would you do ?
If I were you I would say something. IMO, you have to make them aware of their taking advantage of you. You are a paid employee, you work for your paycheck, they are not doing you a favor and paying you for nothing. I would ask to be paid fo the one hour that you worked. If it was just one instance, then I would say don't say anything, but it doesn't sound like they treat you very fairly.

Ummmmm i think its illegal that you don't get a lunch break!! I would demand one. I know there are laws against denying anyone full time a lunch break. Please talk to someone about that!

Re: Kinda off-topic, what would you do ?
I would just blow the hour off only because of the reason of your discussion for your maternity package coming up soon. I wouldn't want to jeopardize that in anyway. I've had jobs where I was taken advantage of and actually spoken up for myself of course very professionally and have lost my job. I've also had jobs that are so into being a team player, that something like that hour would upset them and say you're not being a team player or something. I jsut don't want it to affect your maternity package. Good luck!
