kind of spinnoff to "i'm old" post about manners

... not exactly about manners, but it got me thinking about it.

last night in class, someone mentioned a case where a 21 year old girl went to a party. she got sick. they called for medical assistance. the girl had alcohol, pot, cocaine, and other drugs in her system. her parents are suing the parents of the boy who had the party.

i stated that if it was my kid, when she came out of the hospital, she'd get a beating so bad that she might go back.

yes, it was a bit of an exaggeration. but what happened to personal responsibility????? how does this girl do all those things and then her parents sue someone else... i can't stand this type of stuff.

the case has not gone to trial, yet.

Well her parents may well have disciplined her.

I think her parents see this as two separate issues.

Her parents are looking to make a buck off the people who welcomed their daughter into their home Chat Icon

Whether or not they discipline her, the underlying message IMO is that you can make terrible decisions and put the owness on a third party.

I bet the parents do not see it that way in their quest to get rich off their chilild's poor decisions.

eta: the fact that she is 21 makes the whole situation more absurd..her parents have no jurisdiction to sue she is an adult Chat Icon

If the girl is 21, why is the party host responsible? Also, how are the parents able to sue on her behalf if she is an adult?

I think the home owners may be responsible because even though she was 21 if they can prove the drugs were done at the house they allowed illegal drugs to be consumed in their house.

I think its yet another example of how our society doesn't want to take personal responsibility for their actions, and parents TEACHING their kids that its okay to blame someone else.

No one forced that girl to do pot, cocaine, and drink...she made that choice herself. And newsflash to her parents.....I can say with almost 100% certainty that I bet it was NOT the FIRST time she was doing those things, this was just the first time she got caught cause she got sick. So instead of blaming some neighbors, take a look at your own kid.

This kind of things really p*sses me off, we are such a sue happy society, it disgusts me...and its not like the girl is 12---she is 21---an adult who had the mind set to know what she was doing.

This kind of thing really annoys me too and unfortunatley it changes how we do things.

We have a sliver of land off our parcel, maybe 20'x50' that our neighbor had his child's swingset on. We aren't using the land, it just sits there, but I felt uncomfortable allowing them to keep a swingset on the land - what if someone gets hurt, maybe not their child but a child's friend. We could be sued because technically it happened on our property. So I had to be an azzhole neighbor and ask them to move the swingset off of land that we aren't even using. Chat Icon

When I was a kid, I broke my arm when I fell off my neighbors picnic table, my parents reaction - why were you standing on a picnic table in the first place? Chat Icon

her parents are jerks in my mind. If it was my adult kid doing that I wouldn't even think of taking legal actions unless the parents were pushing drugs/selling. When I did off the wall stuff it was my fault if i over did it and i suffered with the consequences.

Re: kind of spinnoff to "i'm old" post about manners

When I was 17 I got busted for drinking at my friends house with her parents home and they knew what was going on.

I was grounded for what seemed to be forever and my parents flipped on the other parents. Looking back my parents were right we were MINORS.

Big difference in the case of this story, the girl was 21 and "of age" and should be held accountable for her own actions
