Just spoke to a temp agency
and they told me that with my work experience (which I have been out of school for 6 yrs.) the only jobs they would have available are for a salary around $37,000 dollars on Long Island. That is $20,000 dollars less than I was making at my first job when I came out of college. Are these people kidding me?

I think anything in the 20's-40's range are absurd for sustaining a livelihood in LI. I won't even bother with them. Alot of times they just want someone to fill the roles they have, even the lower paying ones!
Move on and do your own search or find another recruiter who will realize your potential - remember it's how you sell yourself alot of times.
