Jury Duty Question
I procrastinated on this obviously. I have a jury duty summons for Monday morning. It's for NYC county where I used to live, but now I've been living in Nassau county for almost the last 2-3 years.
Question - do I need to go to court to tell them that I'm no longer part of the county to get dismissal, or can I just call Monday morning or send the letter back to say I'm not in the county anymore?
Hoping I can do over the phone on the day of

Jury Duty Question
Unfortunately since the summons is for Monday morning, I think you will have to report and then at that time tell them you no longer reside in the county. Calling will probably get you no where and if you send it now they wont receive it for several days after you are due to report.

Re: Jury Duty Question
My sister in law moved to Queens from Suffolk and my MIL kept throwing out her jury duty notices (because she didn't live in the county anymore) and they issued a warrant for her arrest. I would report and explain it to them there.
ETA: she had to go to Suffolk court and show proof of her residency.

Re: Jury Duty Question
If you've never postponed before, you can also request a postponement online (I just did last week and if it's your first time postponing it's automatically approved). You can push it off for 6 months. That'll give you plenty of time to fix the residency issue with the courts.

Re: Jury Duty Question
I dont think there is anything you can do the day of...but when you received it, you could have faxed a letter of travel hardship and requested to transfer your service to a local court.
I did this a couple months ago. I live in Suffolk and was summoned to Brooklyn District Court. I faxed a letter and they re-scheduled my summons for 2 weeks later at the Central Islip Court.
