Job advice needed. Opinions Please

I've been with my company for almost 2 years, and according to my boss AND my review which was signed off on by me, HR and my boss's boss, I will be "re-evaluated in June, at which time a title change and pay increase will be discussed" Without going into too many details, my gut feeling tells me to be very skeptical of this so called re-evaluation. I was told by other employees who have been with the company for 20+ years that my position is what it is, and the company (huge well know corporation) allows a certain # of employees within a dept, therefore, should I be "promoted", I will still be responsible for the petty daily responsibilities that I am now, which I can honestly say I've outgrown. There are days I come home very unhappy because I feel like my job is for someone ALOT younger than I am now.We want to TTC soon, and I am so torn. So, is this really worth it? Any input is gladly taken, I cant tell you how many nights DH and I have stayed up discussing this.

I was in the EXACT situation (except the TTC part.) I'd been promoted twice within my 4 year tenure with the company and yet, my role never really changed. I hated it. For a long time I was torn as well -- do I stay with this company, which is safe and comfortable and I know what I've got or do I go elsewhere, where the work and pay could be better but I don't know what I'm getting in terms of a boss, etc. I ended up making the switch and I'm SO happy I did. If you weren't TTC, I'd say try to switch, too. But since you are, I think it might be better to stay for now. My intution tells me that unfortunately, companies probably won't hire someone who they know will go on maternity leave soon.

How soon are you planning to ttc? If it's not for 6 months or so, I'd give myself 2 or 3 months to try to find a new job, and then if I didn't find one I'd stay until I had the baby and look for a new job while on maternity leave.

I got pregnant faster than we thought I would and was only at my new job 2 months. Since I wasn't there 12 months when I had the baby, I didn't qualify for FMLA or any of the company's maternity benefits. My job did not have to be held for me, and my director and VP both told me that they really liked me and would hold the position open for me anyway. A new VP came in while I was out and they chose to replace my position since they didn't know me from a hole in the wall, and they pretty much brought their whole team from their previous place. I'd decided before that to be a SAHM, so it wasn't a big deal, but if I'd been planning on returning it would have been very stressful.

Plus my health benefits terminated before I left the hosptial (we got on DH's insurance) but it was a nightmare for a few months trying to get things paid since I wasn't on the plan anymore, etc.

I do think it depends on when you plan to TTC. At the same time, I think its important to be happy on a daily basis and we spend so much time at work, its not good to feel resentful or unhappy. I'd start looking for what's out there to see if you think its a good time to switch and if so then go for it - its not worth all the negative feelings.

I am exactly in your position except I've been with my company for 5 and a half years! I've been "promoted" 3 times but my job title has never really changed and my responsibilities have not changed. Since we are TTC within a few months I've opted to just deal and stay where I am. I have about 9 weeks PTO in my bank and my job will hold my position for 6 months. Weigh the pros and cons and good luck!

You need to work at a company for 1 year and at least 1250 hours (from the time you take your leave) to be eligible for FMLA. You also need to work for a company that has at least 50 employees within a 75 mile radius. FMLA entitles you to 12 weeks unpaid leave. Also, if during your leave, your position has been filled, the company must place you in a similar position.

I'd only change positions if I wasn't planning on TTC for several months, and I knew I'd have enough time to become eligible for FMLA at a new company.

You need to be there a year to qualify for FMLA (which is unpaid leave).....I began my job on JUne 26, 2006 and I am out on maternity leave starting on March 8th and I am getting paid maternity leave...granted they could theoretically let me go but I have been assured that my job is safe Chat Icon

Not every company makes you wait 1 year for their maternity benefits, but it's probably better to be cautious. My friend who worked for the same company as me got her full salary for the 12 weeks, I got $170 per week (before taxes) NYS disability for 6 weeks.

As someone else posted before, FMLA is 12 months, 1250 hours and 50+ employees, and that's what guarantees you a job at the end of the 12 weeks with the same company.

Re: Job advice needed. Opinions Please

As someone who changed jobs about 6 months ago, unfortunately I found that many employers held the TTC against you (not that I am, but people see you are married and of a certain age and they just make assumptions). I actually stopped wearing my rings to interviews so people wouldn't think I am married and going to leave when I have kids..

I was in your position about a year ago. I was with the old company for 6 years(a big well known company as well) and I was promoted to many different "titles" and LITTLE payraises. However, I still was always responsible for other petty issues. They even called me on my honeymoon since NO ONE could figure out how to do something! I decided the only way to get respect and possibly more money was to leave. I now have a new job in which I do A LOT less and get paid A LOT more. It was the best decision I made..although it was very hard to leave everything I knew and people who I generally liked, but in the end it was the right thing to do! Good Luck!!Chat Icon

Re: Job advice needed. Opinions Please

I am also in a job where I feel the position is for someone a lot younger and without a college degree. I feel like I am doing petty work and I am BORED b/c it is not challenging at all. I am 8 mo. pregnant and have decided that I will more than likely not be coming back. I also get phone calls off the clock b/c people are too dumb to figure simple things out (actually they are too lazy to figure them out) and I made the decision not to answer my phone after hours.

There are a couple of options for you. If you are not TTC right away, I would look for another job and get your foot in the door for a couple of months and than TTC and you will be entitled to FMLA by the time the baby is born. Or you can stay at your job until you are due, and than start a new job after you have the baby.
