Re: JEWISH RELIGION
Send food.
As someone who has hosted 5 shivas, food is always the appropriate thing to send. The best thing is a deli platter where the family in mourning can eat a meal (cold cuts, pasta, etc...). My father passed away 11 years ago, and I still remember who sent the platter from Bens. But many people send fruit platters and cookies and that is completely appropriate and very thoughtful.
Also, the family usually sits shiva. What that means is that you are welcome into the home of the mourner (wherever its hosted) to express your condolences.
ETA: Definitely send something kosher, especially if its more meal food, and not cookies or fruit.

Re: JEWISH RELIGION
No flowers. Send food to the shiva house. make sure it's kosher.
You can also make a donation to the charity they have designated or plant a tree in Israel

Re: JEWISH RELIGION
If you send food, I would send perhaps a dairy platter. You can't put milk and meat products out together, so dairy or parve (neither dairy or meat), is a safe way to go IMO. Perhaps a nice bagel platter with lox and cream cheese or something.

Re: JEWISH RELIGION
Food is definitely appropriate. Do you know if they keep kosher?
It's not always necessary for it to be kosher.
