Jewish mommies - baby naming question
How soon after DD is born did you have your naming? Maya was born on 12/21 and we are just now thinking about it. At this point, it will have to be in June if we do it because there are other family things going on almost every weekend until then. Is it odd to do it so late? Also, where did you have the party - at the temple, your house, or somewhere else? We have a smallish 2 bedroom condo, so I don't know if it would make sense to do it here, but if we do it at the temple, is that weird? TIA!

You can do it whenever really - my sister named my nephews at 1 year, although I wouldn't wait that long if you can help it:). And you can do it wherever too, my mom reminds me I was named in the rabbi's study.

Re: Jewish mommies - baby naming question
I think within the 1st year is fine. I have a son, but my nieces were done around 4 - 7 months.
My parent's have a nice house so they had the party there. I have been to one at a small hall after the service. I never been to one at the temple, but don't see the problem at all. A lot of temples have halls (our service was at a beautiful temple) or they have a small room where they serve food after service. You usually have to pay for it regardless since you're having a mitzvah

We did a combined baby naming/1st birthday party for Chloe.. WE did it at a hotel and we found a rabbi that would do it for us.
I think usually within the first year is fine.

Re: Jewish mommies - baby naming question
Traditionally, you should have it the first day the torah is out after your DD is born.
I was not comfortable with this since I WAS not bringing my newborn baby into a shul just a few days old in the middle of winter.
What we did is this:
DD was born on a Monday
The following Monday, DH went with my BIL to his shul (they are orthodox) and officially named DD with her hebrew name. I was not there, nor was the baby.
In April when DD was about 10 weeks old, we had a Simcha Bat at my IL's shul. We had a huge buffet/brunch spread, and used this "party" to introduce DD and to officially let everyone know her hebrew name.
My DD made a nice speech, talked about the orign of both her english and hebrew names and gave a nice little "story" about each person she was named after (4 people in total).

You named after 4 people? So their Hebrew names were not a translation of their English names? This fascinates me ..... I am now thinking about doing that... Who made the speech .... did you mean DH, not DD?
