jersey girls, a question????
So we've been mainly looking at LI, but I was bored one day and looked at realty in marlboro, nj and the amt of house and land you get for the $$$$ there is just INCREDIBLE!!!! DH refuses to even discuss it..I need points for him, good ones and bad (for me to hear the honest truth) of the commute to NYC, community, schools, etc that I can talk to DH about, bc honestly the homes there are just stunning and I'm dying for him to just look at even one with me!!!

Taxes in NJ are even worse than LI. I work with people that live near there. They take the Academy bus into the city. It's maybe an hour for them on the express bus. It's really not bad at all. If your DH is used to commuting on the LIRR, then the bus should be no different for him. Marlboro is a nice area and from what I know has good schools. Car insurance is also very high in NJ. I live in NJ, but in Northern Jersey, about a 30 minute train ride to NYC. Our taxes are insane (we pay close to $20k, and our house is the LOW end of our neighborhood).
Marlboro, you would you have to commute by bus, or drive to Metro Park and take the train, it's probably about an hour. But the area is nice and the schools are good.

That's were we live and I was just like your DH, I moved here kicking and screaming and now I don't think I would move back to NY We live on the boarder of Marlboro/Manalapan.
This is going to be long because I never just get to the point
Pro's:
1.) You are 30-35 miles from Newark airport, 45-50 miles into the city, 60 miles to bayside and 75 miles to Farmingdale/N. Massapequa LI.
2.) Your are super close to Route 9 which is kinda like Sunrise Highway on LI. Everything you need is right there. For shopping the furtest I need to drive is 7 miles to the mall (which is really nice). In between my house and mall you have the following stores:
Wegman's (supermarket that I LOVE and the cheapest around, regardless of what any native New Jerseyer says_
TJMaxx
Homegoods
Target
Marshall's
Best Buy
BRU
Bed Bath and Beyond
Kohl's
Shop Rite
Home Depot
Lowe's
Pathmark
Food Town
Fridays/Chili's/Apple be's
Barnes & Nobles

4.) You do get more for you money. There are a few homes a few blocks away from me under $500K with probably close to 1/2 acre but they need some cosmetic updating and maybe a kitchen/bathroom remodeling.
5.) I am about 25 minutes from Red Bank (cute little town that reminds of Great Neck, but more artsy), 20 minutes from Six Flags and the Jackson Outlets, 30-40 minutes from Tinton Falls Outlets, 30-35 minutes from Long Branch beaches, about 40 minutes from Point Pleasant which your daughter will love.
6.) Last week I took the kids durning the week to the Crayola Factory in PA and it only took an hour and 15 mintues. Last year we took them to DW and we made it in under 2 hours so that was a nice day trip.
The Cons:
If you leave off peak hours to traveling back to NY is really anywhere between an hour and hour 1/2 depending where you are going. It takes me 2 hours to get to Medford from my house which is 100 miles. If there is traffic it SUCKS! It did take me 3 hours just to get to Bayside on Friday getting on the Garden State at 6:45 pm.
They only have bus service to the city here. I think the closest train station is Matawan which is about 15 minutes away.
We are about 10 miles from our exit and that is probably the most annoying thing.
I really wouldn't change anything. We know a great realtor. FM me for any questions you have. Even if you want to come by one day let us know. We would be more than happy to show you around.

How far is it from Brooklyn, both sets of parents are in brooklyn and thats what we're most concerned about!

My aunt and uncle live in Marine Park (exit 11) and with traffic it have never taken more than hour. Without traffic about 35-45 minutes. They actually came over durning the day to see me and the kids and my uncle couldn't believe how quick they made it.
My parents live in Farmingdale as did we and it could easily take a min. of an hour to get there or there to us and a lot of times it has taken closer to 2 hours.
One of the mom's from DS's class has her parents in bayridge and it usually takes her half and hour to 40 minutes.

we bought a house in matawan, nj (right near marlboro). our taxes are less.
marlboro has an excellent school district.
taxes are less than LI. the commute to the city is long, but people do it. there are buses, or you can drive. it's a long train ride from monmouth county. NJ transit costs just went up A LOT!
MY DH commutes to NYC and he takes the train from Metropark.

omg totally move to NJ!!! I am a new yorker, born and raised in queens. i never imagined ever moving to nj and absolutely LOVING it.
even my dh says how lucky he is to have found someone that loves nj as much as he does..
all ny'ers trash talk nj..
anyhow, i dont know much about the area of marlboro but i do know that you totally get more for your money in nj than ny.
we are looking to buy next year and since the mother in law watches dd 1-2 days a week, we will prob look to move a little closer to her ( which is further south from NY) We are looking to get something that is 20-30 min commute for his mother who is 70 yrs old, and no more than a 1hr commute to ny for me and dh.
there are a lot of areas that you can look into...
i am still piecing areas of nj together but holmel is really nice, red bank is great...
drawing a blank but honestly, you can get soooooooooooooooo much here!!
i would totally start researching!!
