Re: Jack took a walk....

OMG! That is very scary!

The other night, my friends dog took off into the woods in the back of their house....we called her over and over again and she wouldn't come....then for a while we stopped hearing the sound of her tags jingling....it was sooooo scary....after a half hour she came back, its was the scariest 1/2 hr ever...i felt so bad for my friends, they were a wreck!

When Rudy gets out he is GONE I am always so scared. This is one of the things we work on with him with the doggy trainer.

Re: Jack took a walk....

IT is the most frightening thing.
When we first moved here, I took Misty for a walk and let her off the leash in the park. She chased some deer into the woods and didn't come back for the longest time. I was almost ready to cry - we hadn't gotten her new tags yet or anything.
Thank God she just came running back after about ten minutes...looking, BTW, like she was thrilled to see me too!!

Re: Jack took a walk....

I was told that if my dog gets out or runs away, don't chase him like I am mad at him. His safety comes first, so even if I get mad, I will use food or whatever I can to lure him back. I have also tried walking in the OPPOSITE direction. That has worked, as he then decided that it would be more fun to follow me. We let him run on the beach on Fire Island. There are no cars and it is safe, but if I do not want to lose him, I will use these techniques to lure him back.

He has gotten out the front door twice but he came back when I called him. Another time, his collar broke as he was was pulling me to chase two people on bicycles. I asked the 2 people if they could ride back toward me so I could grab the dog. That worked.

My dog would love to chase cars if he got away, so I am sure he could get hit and that scares me every day. We have started to put his leash on him when we answer the door or even when people are leaving. We taught him "wait" but I do not always trust it, especially with the neighbor's cat in plain sight. I figure that putting him on the leash is the safest, even though it would be good to enforce the "wait" command.

Maybe some of what I do can help you out.

Re: Jack took a walk....

ty ladies,,,you all totaly ROCK !!Chat Icon

... jack always came when we called, so i dont know what got into him this time. i know there are stray cats around and he pulls real hard in those areas when he is wallked, & it was those same places he walked to and just kept going. we are looking into a further obedience classes for him, it just tough finding some on the w/e's

what was so 'funny' was right before his 'walk' jack was playing with the sprinkler & trying to 'eat the water sprays. he looked adorable.

PattyC's... your godson Chat Icon usually is good without the leash in the front & the back of the house, so i really dont know what got into him to say..ok.. lets see how far i can goChat Icon

kerri... i could nout even chase him,, jack had literally disappeared into the bushes Chat Icon the food idea is a good one will def try that. ty

Chris, I would be very cautious about letting him off leash. I have never let my dogs off leash except in our fenced in backyard. Even the best trained dog can get "spooked" or run off. Chat Icon

Katie is never off her leash but she has run out the front door a few times. What I do is I say "Katie want a treat? " Then I head to the kitchen shake the treat jar and she comes running. And yes I give her a treat. Chasing her or following her does not work at all.

i can relate... thank goodness he came backChat Icon

i lost owen in the woods behind my house once. i looked for him for hours, even after dark, and was yelling for him so loud that my neighbors said they heard me at their kids' high school a mile away! when he finally turned up i was so beside myself, i just sat in the middle of the woods and held him and cried for like 20 minutes Chat Icon
