IVF Questions

We are on our 3rd round of IUI and in the 2WW. Although the RE suggested that after 3 IUIs we do IVF, being that we are going away in May, I prefer to do an IUI. So I have some questions for you ladies..

1. What is the approximate costs of doing IVF? My insurance covers $10K max and I am going to NSUH.

2. How many more meds do you do form doing IUI?

3. How long is the IVF process from the day you get your period to the 2ww after IVF is done?

4. Is freezing embryos included in the price and if not about how much is that?

5. Is doing a 4th IUI if IUI #3 fails okay to do or no?

- Depends on the dr and if it's a flat rate of if the charge you individually (like my office did....GRRRRRR) - I had done 1 FET and then maxed out my insurance before ER because they put claims in individually and had me come in for daily monitoring! (GRRRRR again)

2. How many more meds do you do form doing IUI?
-Depends on what you were on for your IUI. Again depends on your dr- but they'll have you on antibiotics and progesterone, and other stuff... the box of meds can be a bit overwhelming but just deal w. them one day at a time.

3. How long is the IVF process from the day you get your period to the 2ww after IVF is done?
-Hmm.... for me I got AF, got put on BCPs for 3 weeks, got AF again then started stimming... then the 2ww- I'd say total like 6 weeks or so... depending on how long you stiim (including your 2ww).

4. Is freezing embryos included in the price and if not about how much is that?
-This depends on the dr's office - you'd have to call them.

5. Is doing a 4th IUI if IUI #3 fails okay to do or no?
-No, IMO if time doesn't permit to do IVF right how- why not do another IUI in the meantime?

Hi I go to NSHR and I just had my retrieval today so i will be happy to help with any questions.
1. I had to pay $2500 out of pocket and my plan covered $10,000 max. That fee included the freezing, the copays for all the times you would go that whole month and something else that I cant remember but can look up if you really need to know, sorry!
2.As for the meds I only did 3 IUIs, 1 unmedicated and 2 with clomid so not sure what kind of injectables you did but I think they are the same. I stimmed for 11 days with menopur and follistim and did 5units of lupron every morning.
3. How long? I started lupron on day21 of my cycle and got my period 10 days later and thats when I started my stims. I guess it depends how long you stim for to determine the full cycle but the paperwork they give you approximates 7 weeks from day 1 of you regular period to transfer.

5.You can only make that decision with your doctor and spouse. I really was hesistant because I only did clomid but my MD didnt even recommend IUI w/inj. I figured I would do 1 more IUI but by that point I was already drained because I did get pregnant with the IUI but unfortunately miscarried. My doctor rec. IVF because with my issues although I did get pregnant, I am on a fight with time, and he said he just didn't want to waste it. Also IVF sounds alot scarier, it's really not so bad! Good luck!

You will probably get 1 cycle out of that. Does that include meds?

Many, many more. You will need lots of different stuff, not just stim meds.

3. How long is the IVF process from the day you get your period to the 2ww after IVF is done?

Usually about 1.5 months, if you go on BCP.

4. Is freezing embryos included in the price and if not about how much is that?

This I don't know, but its not included and the fee is usually nominal.

5. Is doing a 4th IUI if IUI #3 fails okay to do or no?

It depends on what your issues are. I did 3 IUIs before I went to IVF, but then went back to IUI. I got pregnant plenty of times with IUI, I just have an issue where I can't hold pregnancies.

I would check with your dr office, I had to go to an IVF info session and do all sorts of tests before I started IVF.

As for the meds, I took BCP for 2 weeks, then GonalF, Menopur, PIO, estrace, and prog. supps.

I would say try another IUI if timing is an issue it couldn't hurt.

Just wanted to add that for some, the IVF cycle can be shorter depending if you are doing a lupron or non lupron (antagonist) cycle which will be determined by your RE based on age and other factors. A non-lupron cycle there is no lupron or BCP and it can be shorter, about 3 weeks, maybe a bit less. Best of luck with your journey!

Thanks everybody for your responses. This helps alot! IF this IUI doesn't work DH wants to a 4th but I'll wait to speak with the RE and see if he agrees to it. I prefer not to take off 2 months but we'll see...

Just one quick question. Is there a specific reason why one would go on BCP?
