IVF question
do all drs put you on birth control before starting IVF? and if so, for how long and what is the purpose? TIA!

I think most doctors will put you on either bcp or lupron, in order to suppress any early follicle growth. It can also be used to manipulate the timing of your cycle. I was on bcp for 2 weeks one cycle and 4 weeks another.

either BCP or Lupron 98% of the time. it's to completely suppress your natural cycle and hormones so that the doctors are able to control them better (with meds).

My first IVF cycle was recently cancelled because I had 2 lead follicles run away from the pack (17.5 and 16.5 while the others were between 5 and 10) . I wasn't on BCP or lupron that time, just estradiol patch for 2 wks beforehand. This time, I'll be on BCP, with microdose lupron taken alongside Bravelle and Menopur. The hope is that by adding BCP and lupron, my follies will grow more uniformly. The BCP are supposed to suppress early follicle growth.

It's to supress you and to time it better. I was on bcp for almost 2 mo (to coincide with Drs timing) and Lupron for 3.5 weeks to supress endo. I came off bcp, got AF about 10 days later and on monitoring day ( a week later), I already began making follies despite the lupron. I wasn't supposed to begin stims until 2 days later. So lupron didn't totally supress me. My ovaries were like "let's get this show on the road".

I was on it my first cycle and was miserable. I am a wreck emotionally on BCP and I without fail I gain 10-15lbs within the first 2 weeks  My second fresh cycle I asked not to be on it and my RE had zero issues with it. I have no idea why I was on it in the first place because I have regular cycle and we are dealing with strict male factor, so I can't answer that question. I think it's just routine sometimes for doctors to put you on it, whether you need it or not.

I was not on it during my last cycle because when I was on it for a prior cycle it most likely suppressed me too much ...I am 40 and found out after going for second opinions that this does happen. I would discuss this with your doc if you are not producing enough follicles.
